This one has been kicking around a while so I'm surprised it hasn't made it here yet, but from May onwards a Top and Tail Class 31 set is due to work one of the local diagrams out of Norwich because of the shortage of units for local lines.

There's a 31 due to go to Norwich early next month for timing runs and staff training, but from May it is expected to work in place of NC624 which would see it do 1 service to Gt Yarmouth and Lowestoft in the morning, then again on the evening MFO.

Currently this diag has a trip to Sheringham in which will be removed, most likely to the NC702 diag as this is where the unit off Sheringham does one round trip to Yarmouth as 624 does Sheringham!

Cost, and available resources.

Dont forget the willingness to do things long term - if the DfT wanted to solve this properly they could put the idle 180s into use somewhere to allow an extra 156 or 170 to go to Norwich.

With Peds?! What time do you want to get there, next year?
It'll be through wired Fragon-scrap Mk2s.

Beat me to saying something like that

Why not have a word with DRS with some of there stock, Top'n'Tail 37's, 194 and 229 all summer please ;)

I wonder how many other companies that under ordered will be resorting to this sort of fun stock? TPE might be looking at HSTs again soon, Northern might be getting 321s (I think they should get the stock from London Midland at the same time they electrify and 90mph the Bolton line, then cascade the 321s onto the Stockport and Airport express routes, or say a preston - macclsfeild service, use the 323s on Bolton Stoppers because of their killer acceleration, and chuck in the Blackpool North electrification too then TPE can get some more 350s!

Maybe have something on the Woodhead route, such as electrify it and extend it all the way to sheffeild again! then run the 321s there :D

If only all of that ever came true (doesn't stop us from dreaming!).

Last I heard was that Northern won't be getting any 321s. Seems that the DfT want Northern to get a new-build fleet of EMUs to allow the 323s to be transferred to Birmingham.

Anyway, good to see 31s being used on more main line passenger duties again. Thought we'd never see such things after the collapse of FM Rail.

Dessies, Bombers or Junipers?

Proberbly one of the first two, passenger femiliaraty in most of the northern areas with 185s or possibly 170s. But northern always get *88** over on stock, they where ment to be getting turbostars for Scarbrough - Sheffeild and York - Blackpool!

They did get the 158's in exchange for the 14x though.......and the heaton depot has the best performing 14x fleet in the country - over 5000 mpc.

Yeah well, I don't deal with English much, I tend to write more in greek and other letters with a lot of equals signs and sqiggley lines, they all make more sense...

Sorry, missed the 'engineering' bit of your post somehow...

Can't stand maths myself, so I could not become an engineer. Too much 'i a = 6 and b = a after being timed by Y when Y = ab, what is c?' kind of rubbish for me!

Let's hope the situation with ECT/Mainline Rail doesn't scupper the use of 31s in East Anglia. Seems incredible how complicated a loco hauled train is these days, must be some short memories out there!

The only fun thing you have stated there is a HST
