Class 31s at Eastleigh

I don't really know much about rolling stock but was interesting to see a top and tail couple of class 31s at Eastleigh on Tuesday night just gone- going to Devon I think with some gravel or something....bloke driving was ex-SWT driver- are there still many of these about? Good growl.....

Mainline examples are;
31105/106/233/285/465 - used by Network Rail on test trains.
31190/452/601 - in use with Devon & Cornwall Railways wagon/stock moves (along with 31454/468/602 stored).
31422/459 stored at Derby RTC.

Whilst, there are a good few in preservation.

On another note, does anyone know which 31s these were?

I dont know, most 31s are used on NR (yellow peril) trains and got revenue earning trains.

Apologies. Confused as to the working as most ballast workings in the South are usually 57/3s (which are yellow), 73s and 66s (that's all I know of).
So confused to hear about top and tail 31s on ballast working :-?

It was probably a DCR loco, the Rail-Vac is quite often located at Eastleigh with a DCR 31 coupled to it, more often than not 31190, id be surprised if it was'nt that one.

GearJammer is spot on- it was DRC with the vac thingy- on its way to devon i believe.....must admit I took a photo and a video lol

31190 and 31452 with railvac and 3 open wagons inbetween
This was at Eastleigh most of the week and stabled in the old loco
holding sidings by the London end of the station

31105 departed from the old BREL site pushing 3 yellow coaches at
approx 1035 as I walked over the Bishopstoke road bridge. It headed
up the main line.

To put this straight, the ones you saw in Eastleigh Station were the DCR pair - 190 & 601 on the RailVac with a few other wagons - Ex Railtrack PNAs.

The other 31 in that area all week has been 31105 which has visited & stabled several times recenmtly with one of the NR Test Trains (TNT with the DBSO) and should currently in the yard being refuelled ready for its next outing around the Southern Region.

Ah, almost same time posting as Y186520!

31190 & 31452 + the RailVac have been in Totton Sidings since Monday night, lots of movment everyday down there, starting to load ballast into wagons daily & a track tamper there, that & the 6 coaches already parked up is making Totton Yard busy :D

Thanks for the photo, i saw them late last night from brokenford and couldnt work out what they were. Tried limbing fence at totton timber but too old for that now!
