Somebody loaded the music clip into either the firmwarte or the softwere. Permission is needed to do that (copyright) and a licence is needed that allows it to be played. If the PIS manufacturer did it they will may get a call from the agents of Mike O'Donnell/Junior Campbell. If it was some oik at Northern, the same. Not very clever.

Clearly a test mode given the text, and we don't know permission wasn't obtained. Given it would be for testing, I can't see the copyright owners demanding loads of money, or possibly anything at all.

It could even be seen as good advertising as everyone probably knows the theme.

Doesn't normally work that way, the copyright owners usually see it as they are owed money opposed to being given free publicity.

Normally it doesn't, no. But take Google and their deal for KitKat. No money changed hands over that. Nestle saw a clear promotional benefit.

Apparently they tried for Nutella but didn't succeed, so the latest OS is now called Nougat.

If a programmer put an audio clip in without permission, there could be problems. Of course, the copyright holder may not care as it's not being broadcast (I think we can accept it's not intended to be used by Northern on a regular basis) and still take no action.

Maybe someone who really cares should ask Northern and report the clip to the copyright owners and let them sort it out, but it doesn't seem like anyone would take it too seriously. I wouldn't, for example, expect legal action to be taken as it would be negative PR for a start.

(I have no idea if a PRS license would be needed for such a situation like this.. but perhaps they'd take an interest as they obviously have a motivation to profit by taking legal action)

We're talking about a clip of music here. Normally the copyright owners of music are strict about the copyright being used properly, a lot more so than the owners of a brand name or logo.

I did that already... They are looking into it. Now I like the clip, I really do, but if it slips to this during service then it is going to cause problems for visually impaired people

I wouldn't expect a test modes to be invoked often. It's surprising it was on a public service, but that's probably down to word going round the mess room and it being amusing.
