The Class 318 will go through its next major refurbishment starting late 2013 at Doncaster Wabtec.

This will include:

Relivery into Scotrail Saltire Livery
Internal Refurbishment
Any corrosion repairs to bodywork
Underframe work ???
(Disabled Toilet - ???)

according to this it says out on 25th of november back on monday any one got any info on this as cant see any refurb on this stock yet

I'm amazed they spend money refurbishing trains so old.

They aren't yet 30 years old and would be expected to continue beyond 2020. Some of the work being done is required to allow them to continue in service beyond that date.

Are they about 25 years old? To me some of these trains just are not fit for the job. Especially the two carriage ones on the Edinburgh line.

The 318s are 27-28 years old - the typical life expectancy of EMUs seems to be 40-50 years so they're maybe 2/3rds of the way though their lives.
Mk3-based EMUs are pretty solid, no reason why they shouldn't be good for another 15 years or so.

All 318s are (and always have been) 3-car units, you're probably moaning about 156s or something.

I thought class 318s had a minor refurbishment around 2005. I rode one with a revised front end in 2006.

318251 was only put down as an estimated date of 25th November for coming out of Wabtec, this was based on the Class 320 refurbs, however as it is the first one being done, I would expect it to take longer.

I believe it is fully repainted already, and it is now getting mods and internal work done. I would think it will be back up the road prior to Xmas, but happy to be corrected on this

They need far more than a light refresh this time. I have the unfortunate "pleasure" of traveling on them every day and they really need completely gutting and a full interior overhaul to bring them up to date.

Old?!? The class 318s are the same age as me. And they really are good trains.

I really hope they don't get the 320s' annoying "doors opening" beep.

I live along the Yoker line and use it every day. As soon as I see the refurbished unit, I'll take some pictures.

Scot-Rail's wiki still says the first 318 is due back on the 20th of December, but I haven't seen it around yet. Found this on Eversholt Rail's site:

In addition, Eversholt Rail will tomorrow (5 October) start its refurbishment of the Class 318 fleet, leased by ScotRail, with the first unit already at Wabtec. This fleet consists of 21x3 carriage units and the work will include a C6X overhaul, targeted PRM TSi work, reliveried interior and exterior, full interior rebrand, reliability enhancements and corrosion repairs. The work will take two–and–a–half years to complete, with around £11m investment from Eversholt Rail.

Steve Montgomery, ScotRail’s Managing Director, said: “We welcome the work to further improve the condition of these trains and hope that the changes will enhance the overall experience for our customers. Passengers travelling from and to Helensburgh, Balloch, Dalmuir, Milngavie, Airdrie, Springburn, Larkhall, Lanark, Carstairs and Coatbridge Central stations will benefit from the works.”

Pretty sure they will as part of any sort of refurbishment, that's mandatory for disability requirements now isn't it?

Wiki is only an estimated date on Scot-rail.

With this being the 1st unit, they tend to take longer.

With the Class 318 having operated on the Ayrshire coast prior to moving to Argyle services, they will probably have quite a bit of bodywork corrotion

When they were last done at Wabtec Kilmarnock, there were huge variations in the amount of corrotion on each unit

Hi, does anyone know when the 1st refurbed Scotrail 318 is due back in service. I know it was delayed as there was alot more corrosion found than 1st thought.

that date has been revised so many times just have to wait and see as more work is done on the stock

Would this refurb include a proper interior refresh as well? The 334s have had their green plastic and red seat covers replaced with grey, blue and yellow handrail standard ScotRail design but the 320s were kept mostly the same, including painting the new toilet in the old colours. Maybe that's why they'll take that much longer than the 320s did...

Considering that it went south in Oct 2013 over six months to refurbish one unit is rather taking the mick!

I was a bit surprised at their removal as I always thought the flexibility offered by gangway connections was popular with most operators and passengers alike , as seen by their presence on Scotrails latest emu's the Desiros

the 318's are having a c6x refurbishment this includes

external and internal repaint
full body strip corrosion inspection and repair
disabled toilet
new seat covers
reliability enhancements

It does make me wonder just what state it was in when it arrived in Doncaster. At this rate they could have built new units faster.

I really can't see them reducing the time taken being reduced from the six months this one has taken to the apparent one month it should take anytime soon!

There are some other components replaced in a C6 exam, it's not just a repaint.

It is likely that a refurbished component is giving issues and require to be resolved before heading home.
