With the various posts on Class 318/320 reaching 40yrs old soon… does anyone know when next major overhaul is due, if they are to continue in service.
My thoughts are that the Class 320 could be due in 2yrs with the Class 318 2 years behind.
Not sure where bogie overhauls are if they are more spread out.

Realistic are parts available to keep the Class 318/320 going for another 10 yrs if replacements cant be delivered sooner?

I think we’re stuck with Class 318/320s for a little while yet. They certainly did outlive other mk3 EMU classes that have already been scrapped.

There was a procurement for their replacement recently, but inevitably Class 318s will turn 40 in two years time.

Because we are nearly into 2025 now which will make the 318s 39 years old. They are still running on main stream services. it was announced in 2022 there was a plan to have new units procured. Doesn’t seem like we’re any further forward that’s why

Scotrail want to reduce the number of classes they operate so they'll be replaced with whatever BEMU scotrail order. It'll replace 318/320/334/158/170 and 156

Any new trains are literally years and years away, there will need to be a cascade of Intercity type trains to plug the gap when the HSTs go and these units will also have to be figured for ScotRails method of driver/guard working if they are not already set up that way.

I've no idea if thats just a rumour, or if theres anything in this. They will need to be an intercity type layout, lots of luggage space,, lots of std class seating as well as first class seating, door control panels for Conductor operations. The bigger the list, the less suitable trains that fit requirements are available.

In regards to full time HST replacements, it has been mentioned that loco hauled stock is not beyond the realms of possibility either.

That's definitely impressive. It'll mean the 318s and 320s will have 45 and 41 year service lives respectively

Per bidstats

Class 318 (21 x 3car) 5 years from 1 Jan 28 to 31 Dec 2032 £54,700,000 + vat, option of extra year

Class 320 (22 x 3car) 5 years from 1 Jan 28 to 31 Dec 2032 £57,300,000 + vat, option of extra year

Class 320/4 (12 x 3car) 5 years from 1 Jan 28 to 31 Dec 2032 £31,200,000 + vat, option of extra year

That's definitely impressive. It'll mean the 318s and 320s will have 45 and 41 year service lives respectively
Bit longer than that, 318s entered service from September 1986 with Ayrshire electrification, so end of 2032 will be 46 and a bit years.

The 320s and particularly the 318s have received heavy refurbishments in their lifetime so it’s unsurprising they are lasting so long. It will be nice to see new units on the North Clyde/Argyle Lines when the time comes, however.

What is the leasing company contributing to make this a good investment?

Being pedantic, the Class 487s lasted in service for 53 years and the Class 483s a whopping 83 years.

Roy
Indeed they did - I am guilty of not writing "main line EMU".

I can still recall my fascination at the wallowy lurching ride of the 487s and their carriage-end interior ventilation grilles cast with the word SOUTHERN.

These two classes are the main stock of my local lines alongside the 334s and have been my entire life, so I feel I have something of a vested interest in this.

Seeing this development, I am anything but surprised. They are imho the most comfortable and all-round smoothest-riding EMUs in the fleet with the most comfortable seating - you can debate amongst yourselves the evils of 3+2 seating; I personally have never had a real issue with it on the 318s/320s or the 334s in the over 20 years I've been travelling on them - plus they're still capable of swallowing up the crowds in the peaks even in their ever-increasing dotage.

This news also isn't a surprise when one looks at the broader picture, given the invitations to tender for the contract to build their replacements has only gone out in the last week or two and they won't appear until 2030-31 at the very earliest given the complexity and scale of such a order.

With both classes having undergone several major overhauls/refurbs throughout their careers and have been otherwise better looked after than their cousins down south, I can see them staying the course pretty well. It also helps that unlike the 323s, they have a by and large common spares pool to draw from, especially with every other Mk3-based EMU having been removed wholesale from service barring the handful of Varamis 321s. Granted, that spares pool ain't infinite, but it's a sight more plentiful than the 323s.

Quids in for Eversholt to be able to keep milking fully paid off assets for another 5-7 years too, so all good as far as they're concerned.

Just as long as they don't suffer a catastrophic and sustained drop in availabilty/reliablity in this time period, the current status quo will be maintained until their replacements finally move beyond the realm of being a glint in a Argyle Line commuter's eye.

Has the invitation to tender gone out yet? I thought this was next yr if not later?

As to the 320/3 they will definitely need another overhaul/refurb as TBOx was done 2019-2021, so they must be due next year I would have thought… the 318 again if it going to be 2032 at least then I would think they will need another overhaul to keep them going, so would suspect 2028/29

Depends how much money needs to be spent on corrosion repairs!
Not as much as in times past, as although 318s/320s still regularly skirt the Clyde between Kilpatrick and Dumbarton on Balloch - Airdrie services and I believe that they're still booked for a handful of Inverclyde services, they haven't worked regularly to either Helensburgh or anywhere in Ayrshire (namely past the seawalls at Cardross, Craigendoran & Saltcoats respectively) for some time, so corrosion likely won't be quite as pervasive.

The Helensburgh route being the primary domain of the 334s would neatly explain why there's been fairly extensive corrosion found on the 334s that have gone down to Wolverton for overhaul in recent months; goes without saying that frequent exposure to salty sea air will do that.

The relevent bidders were informed on 17th July, but nothing has been officially made public by either them or ScotGov/Transport Scotland/ScotRail and I doubt it will be anytime soon. See here:

Like I said in that thread, I doubt we'll see any real movements towards an order actually being placed until the back half of 2027 at the absolute earilest, though given how these things slip and there's a pattern for it - the 334s, 380s & 385s all suffered delays that utterly screwed up set plans, and they were all pure EMUs, not BEMUs - am fully expecting it to be the back half of 2028 before anything really substantial happens.

As to the 320/3 they will definitely need another overhaul/refurb as TBOx was done 2019-2021, so they must be due next year I would have thought… the 318 again if it going to be 2032 at least then I would think they will need another overhaul to keep them going, so would suspect 2028/29
I suspect the 320/3s will be next in the queue after the 320/4s are done, then the 318s will be the last to be dealt with.

With just over 4 weeks to the 40th year of operating services 318250 returned to service after 16 days at Shields Depot getting a C4 overhaul
First service back this morning was 0617 Dalmuir to Larkhall with 318268, which had a new pantograph by the looks of things
