This is definitely true. It's unfortunate that the worst trains are those to Hertford East which can only be single class 720s. Logically they would rework the diagrams so that they are self contained and put pairs of 317s on there until the platforms are lengthened at Hertford. I know I've said this before but imagine the chaos if Covid had not happened. How have they got this so badly wrong?
Wouldn't surprise me dft again. As well as the strikes the passengers are also suffering from cutbacks. To save money withdraw 317s. No excuse they are fully disabilitie compatible so can run. Yes so badly run 317s should not be withdrawn this early. Bad planning and a bad Tory led Dft government who hates rail staff. 317s and also in reality doesn't care for the passengers who use them. With fares not worth the value of service. Since December 2019. Gone horribly wrong.
However does anyone know what has gone to Ely today please.

Perhaps if there hadn't have been a pandemic, the supply chains would have been less starved and the manufacturer would have got more units out of the factory due to less staff being furloughed and more parts being available? ;)

Perhaps but that doesn't help with the Hertford platform scenario.

I'm sure other factors come into play - such as servicing / maintenance etc. There comes a point where everything is geared up for the 720's at the depots - and trying to keep a handful of 317's on a rapidly emptying parts bin becomes challenging. And let's not forget they were supposed to have been withdrawn ages ago. Obviously GA want a single fleet where possible, and that looks to be achieved on West Anglia now (except Stansted Express)

I wouldn't call the 745 fleet troublesome. The 745 reliability figures seem to be way better than the 317's were, but the figures suggest 745/1's seem to suffer more failures than 745/0. I wonder if that is infrastructure related in some way? What makes it more surprising is that the 745/0 fleet concentrated on the GEML side do run up to their 100mph maximum speed - whereas the 745/1's run at mainly 70-80mph and fleetingly to 90mph on WA. I'm told the majority of failures are software related where a simple reboot does the job.

Anyway - back to the 317's - personally i'm happy to see the back of the 317's. I remember using them in the 'bedpan' and great northern electric days when they were shiny and new. They are knackered now having been in service way longer than they should have been. No farewell tour needed.

Do Stratford P11 and P12 hold 2 x 5-car 720?

There are reports elsewhere that the 317's left have actually now been retired. Is this correct?
The 317/5s have apparently been officially stood down, and no 317s have worked all week, so it would seem there is no more booked work for them. A quiet demise like that of the 379s on the same routes.

now there are no 317s around wonder when we will see any timetable changes to take into account the better performance of the 720s, they are noticeably quicker. Appreciate all stops other than Stortford removed, and obviously had a clear run, but 35 mins Brox to Cambridge is very good going

The loops at Broxbourne are only eight car as well. Any plans to lengthen them? With the various infrastructure constraints, there's not much that can run with a 10 car 720.

think they can accommodate 2x720 with SDO - i was on a 745 on a Liv St Stansted A service stuck at platform 4 for an hour for some reason or other and driver released doors on rear 6 coaches.

Interesting on Greater Anglia’s twitter. Doesn’t sound right though

Agreed, at first it looks like 745s will be calling additionally to cope with the crowds but the diagram shows 2x 6 coach units.

Can't be a triple 317 as those units don't have SDO

745s were ordered as half units as Stadler don’t offer a twelve carriage train.

End of the month works to rectify that issue:
24/7/22
31/7/22

There are plans to extend, not sure of the dates. There are works on the 7th August in the area, not sure if that's for the over bridge removal or the platform extensions.

720 is a 5 car only in the rear platforms I do believe.

No different to a 700, but you don't see Thameslink putting cabs in the middle of the pictures like GA did on that poster about short platforms at Northumberland Park

A 745 doesn't have much sensible passenger accommodation in its middle. A 700 has the universal toilet and an open area for passengers to use.

The 745s were ordered as 12-car sets. Stadler‘s technical solution to the requirement was to offer two single-ended FLIRTs back-to-back.

Yes well that’s what I mean. They’re basically two single-ended six carriage sets.

With the exception of high-speed multiple units, any units that are longer than six cars typically comprise two ”half trains”.

Subject of course to change but it would appear at the moment that 317507 and 317508 are allocated to the diagram starting Bishops Stortford at 05:30 and finishing Stratford at 23:09, operating Stratford - Meridian Water / Bishops Stortford all day. A final hurrah?! If this is correct, I just hope they stay out until this evening when I can make it into town for a bash!

Thanks for that, I’m going to try and get a ride today.

Thanks for the information, I had a trip out on the 11:46 to Meridian Water. The remained on diagram with the 12:30 to Bishops Stortford.

317339 & 317340 have just passed through Hackney Downs with the 5H80 Ilford to Cambridge Sidings North.

Does anyone know why it’s going to Cambridge? Is this one next destined for Ely?

More likely a hot spare at Cambridge. Monday morning is worth keeping an eye on. They often seem to end up short of 720s for some reason.
