Are any units still at Harwich? Also has anyone head any updates regarding the DTSO at EARM or the other carriage at The Depot at Caxton?
No 317s at Harwich/Parkeston now, just loads of 379s. It has been hard to keep up with which ones in particular as pairs have been swapping between there and Ilford, with some pairs splitting and coming back to Harwich/Parkeston with different partners.

I was surprised to see 3 pairs of 317s out today, sadly I didn't time it quite right and ended up on a 720 instead. Certainly was nice to see them out though!

Anyone know which workings they are on today?
I have a report from a friend that 0620 and 0818 CBG-LST are pairs and 0720, 0847 CBG-LST and 0729 ELY-LST are single class 317s. So there should be plenty out there to choose from.

5G44 didn't run today or yesterday so nothing obvious lined up for the storage move to Ely Papworth today. Given that there have been daily weekday short forms since Friday, storing more probably isn't a good plan.

So hopefully before any more go into store. At least a few should remain to may but Not guaranteed.
On saying that though in the past fortnight or so 720 deliveries from derby has dried up. Plus 720s have not been on test from oxley around the Midlands in the last fortnight or so.
Hence slowing down introduction.
Hence hopefully ensuring 317 should remain into may timetable change ie a little extra before they finally retire.
However reference above today from my source confirms 2 pairs bishops stortford to Stratford. 1 pair hertford east to London liverpool Street.
Usual pair on the cambridge.
Two solo pairs at least one solo vice 720 on cambridge. And full. Obvious reasons for them 317 to stay.

Ie two solo 317 turns one 317 solo vice 720 and another 317 vice a pair off 317s on the cambridge also. However to shortform a pair off 317s to let one cover for a 720. However glad to see not any more go into store. Hopefully 317s become 8 car again to ease shortforms and abeillo Anglia see sense to keep them running before they do go for withdrawal rather than store them at ilford or orient way as a in case off those still in service.

Seems so wrong that a vehicle at that good condition is being scraped

It's been somewhat inevitable for the 317/7 fleet for the last decade though, having been in and out of storage for a good proportion of it - it was of course London Overground that saw them cling on for a few more years, before GA needed them back again.

To be fair the 317s are pushing on 40 now, especially the earlier ones.
This. The British Rail PEP and Mk3 derivative multiple units seem to have remarkable staying power, but even they have a definite lifespan.

What’s the latest with the platform extensions at Hertford East and Stratford? All seems to have gone a bit quiet. I can assume this will be one of the determining withdrawal factors for the 317s

It’s certainly not quiet at the moment, as the conversation started up again on Friday following posters displaying “platform extension” engineering work on Hertford.

You’ll find lots of information at https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/hertford-east-branch-platform-extension-updates.229607/

The first BedPan ones are over 40 years although they sat idle for sometime whilst DOO was being thrashed out that said there proving more enduring than there younger 379 sisters.

Driver training started on the Bedpan 317s in March 1983. The class were introduced into service from early May 1983 on the existing DMU schedules. I had 317334 on the 17.04 ex St.Pancras as far as St.Albans for 317324 on the 17.27 back to St.Pancras on 4/5/83. The full electric service commenced on Monday 11/7/83.

Perhaps for the sake of clarity I should add that 317324 became 317882 and 317334 became 317890.

Only because of commercial reasons. The 317s are going straight to the scrapyard once they're done; probably made easier by the fact that it's Angel Trains who owns the Class 720s anyway.

I’m assuming some of them will be around for the best part of 2022 yet.
I am not so sure. You cannot always say the never, never. Also a 720 on Friday 01st April 2022. 720588 entered service and another one got dropped off at Wembley from Derby.
Also only x10 317s was out as opposed to x13 to x14 317s earlier on in the week.
However my opinion only, more 321s could be diagrammed from May, in order to allow complete 720 on the west side causing all 317 to be withdrawn. Who knows?

317513+317348 on 5G44 and 317515+317342 already at Cambridge. I think the latter pair will go to Ely today and the former tomorrow. Which leaves 17 units in service.
