Anyone know what the long term plan for the /7 is? I went passed them today at Ely and they are still there. I know they made a comeback a few months ago but it was very brief. Could they comeback again?

There's no PRM dispensation been issued for them, so in all likelihood a one way ticket to Eastleigh or Newport awaits.

The likelihood is that they’ll probably go for scrap

I’ll be honest I only just realised I haven’t seen one since late March. It was in ex-LO colours and coupled to a /5 at Hertford East. For whatever reason I chose to ride in the /5 end. If I knew the end was nigh for the /7s I would have gone in the /7 end. It still had the ex-LO seats, interior etc.

Only a couple of them received the LO interior. Most retained their blue Stansted Express interior from the early 2000s!

How long do the 317s have left on the west anglia line?
I can see them going into next year to be honest. I think it all will follow after the influx of 720s on the Great Eastern side. Remember that all or most of the remaining 317s are actually PRM compliant. The priority must be replacing the non compliant 321s on the Great Eastern side before anything else as far as I know.

Todays's Railways UK recently had an item about Greater Anglia. There was a fleet cascade plan which showed all 27 class 317s on lease until February after which they decrease rapidly over the next two months. Of course they could be stored earlier than that or withdrawn if they have a major fault. Some or all of 317338/339/340 have already moved to Harwich. They could well run again though. Last time units were parked at Harwich for several weeks and then ran empty to Liverpool Street and straight into service on the 1028 to Cambridge.

Judging by what ive seen recently, am I right in saying that 317s are only being used on services to bishops stortford and hertford east?

A few have been used as far as Cambridge North too, albeit not as often. The 379s have oddly been put back on SE services as well the past few days…

I had the 'pleasure' of travelling 317337 (with 317344) to CBG on 17.13 from LST (2H46) on 23rd August. Well past its use-by date. A huge step-down from the 379s I've travelled on previously.

They really are at the end of their lives now and it's showing more than ever. Somehow though I expect they'll still be some running around past February.

Sorry to ask a really silly question, but are the stored 317s at Harwich relatively easy to get photos of? I might be passing by tomorrow afternoon, and the odds of my getting a final spin on a 317 are looking more and more unlikely. So if I get the chance to grab a couple of photos, that might have to do!

They are easily visible from passing trains (on the left approaching HPQ).

My records have the following differences:
317348 and 317885 as having gone to Ely for store back in April - have they returned from Ely or was I incorrect in the first place about them ever moving there?
317710 as being in warm store at Harwich - does anyone know when it transferred to Ely please?

I've seen both 348 and 885 in service fairly recently, I'm not so sure that they actually moved there in the first place.

I don't think 317348 or 317885 have ever been stored. 317338/340/344/883 spent some time at Harwich and 317504/512 were stabled at Cambridge for a few weeks. Whether they were stored or defective I don't know. There was a period of short formations at the start of June when the 317/7 were all stopped so the six units mentioned were soon put back in to service.

Thanks both, I've checked back to around the date I had them down as having moved and there is no suggestion that either ever moved. Not sure where I plucked that from

A bit off topic I know but I saw a surviving 317 in the depot adjacent to platform 8 at Cambridge with lights off and no sign of life. Every couple of minutes the engine fires up and makes a loud 317 rattling noise for 10s or so before going off. What is that noise? Why is the train still doing things when it appears off and has no driver? Always wondered! Thanks.
