That's because most Cambridge services are formed by 379's. However Cambridge still sees a lot of 317's in the peaks, with one 317 still booked for Kings Lynn (1H90 1907 LST-KLN forms 1H83 0519 KLN - LST the following morning).

When I was out photographing the Buffer Puffer railtour on Saturday, I noticed that the Chingford services were a mix of 315s and 317s. Is that usual for a Saturday, or is it because there was engineering works on affecting the Hertford service?

Ill try not to confuse but heres why:lol:...

Chingfords are mixed evenly off peak by 317s and 315s everyday. The diagrams have been changed somewhat in that xx.55 and xx.25 chingford departures become Hertford east services (317s) at london xx.12 and xx.42. At chingford xx.10 and xx.40 become cheshunts at london xx.15 and xx.45 (315) then return to london and become enfields 20 mins later. By doing this it freed up 20mins turn around times in london accross the board whereas before 315 diagrams would do all chingfords and alternate between going cheshunt and enfield some 9 mins later and hertfords were pretty much locked onto that line with a turnaround in london of 12 minutes. The peaks are somewhat different though.

Was that interworking part of the changes to diagramming that allowed them to take a number of units off lease, or did it come later?

Presumably the flip side is that interworking between routes and fast turn-rounds cause more chaos when random events such as bridge bashes occur

That change came later. The 317/7s were working on the GEML by the time they were taken off-lease, and they were covered for by 321 higher fleet utilization, and fixing up all the Christmas Trees at Ilford.

As Cambridge has already been discussed, do 317s turn up regularly at Stansted Airport anymore?

No, there are no 317 workings into SSD anymore, all 379.

And XC 170 into Platform 2. MAG/GA should paint the station in white and red - but if the future long-term franchisees recolour stock? :o

Love the 317s- great units, particularly the twenty four second series 317/6s (formerly 317/2s)

Remember 20 years ago when they provided all Cambridge services from both termini, and to Peterborough as well. I managed to spot all bar one at that time.

These units have served well, on so many routes. Sadly, for the forty eight first series units, some are a bit tired, and others have been changed around somewhat.

Lets lets hope that the whole fleet they continue to do so for a good while yet.
