An esteemed source on a former Yahoo Group confirmed it as Monday 8th December 1980, on a day very much overshadowed by a certain assassination. The first units in service were paired as follows: 802+811, 806+804 and 808+809.
315802 was out on the last day to Chingford, so just shy of 40 years. I guess all the remaining units have cleared 40 years service now.

Ah, they are older than I thought…I started working on them in July 1982 in Ilford Carriage Sidings.

So are any still in service?
Yes one pair does 0751 Shenfield to Liverpool Street. Another pair does 1630 Liverpool Street to Shenfield and runs up and down until about midnight. Be warned that the 0751 up gets absolutely wedged full from Ilford to Stratford.

Only six remain so will be one of either 315837/838/847/853/856/857
There’s no doubt they’ve already picked their unit - I can imagine the ones heading for scrap are their rejects/the ones in not as good condition (that being said, the 315s are in pretty good condition these days)

That rather assumes that they have the funds to move it. I’ll believe it when it happens after the last effort.

Not necessarily, as Eversholt merely said they had their pick from the remaining 8 with TfL Rail. There’s no doubt they already picked their unit, however as you’ve said, I highly doubt they’ve given much thought to moving the unit to its chosen location.

Are these still in service? I haven’t seen one in the last few weeks of commuting

See post #1328. There is literally one working in the morning peak so it's no surprise that you haven't seen any.

My understanding is they will be gone when or just after the Abbey wood to Paddington section of the core is open ( sometime between mid May and end of June 2022)
Presumably acceptance of 345018 and the temporary suspension of the 7 to 9 car conversion process yields the two required units to dispose of the 315s.

853+847 out yesterday evening 25 April. Anyone know which other 315 pairs are left with TfL Rail?
See posts 1335 and 1343 above - 853+847, 856+838, 857+837 - reported elsewhere that the higher numbered unit in each pair is at the London end.

So will that mean that the 315s will be retired by the 24th May?
There is no reason that the retirement of the 315s is directly related to the opening of the Paddington to Abbey Wood service. As explained before, the key factor would appear to be all 70 345 units being available as 9-car units
