Hi there; at the moment how many of the 315s are required to work the Shenfield line? I was just thinking about the possible future cascades that the thameslink and crossrail projects would cause.

Ah, thanks! By the looks of it there are around 30 units that would be freed up. I should know anyway, I'd even posted in that topic! Stupid me:roll:

I was going to say who would want them? Solid reliable work horses but theyve had their day & owe the railway nothing.

I too am not in favour of keeping them going really, but I keep hearing the ideas that they may move to Wales.

Common assumption is that they'll end up in South Wales.

Beats a Donkey i suppose. When you see the crush loadings & hard work they deliver day in day out on the GE Metro route it really P*sses me off when somebody tweets about the odd breakdown or short formation.

Even if it is true, some (quite a lot of) people use Twitter to moan. Silly but there we have it.

If we can still get reasonable use out of the 315s, why scrap them? The case for electrification has been based on having these units available, for 5-10 years until new stock can be justified with increasing passenger numbers. Even continuing in GA, they may still be useful.

Despite the 'interesting' colour scheme inside (thanks National Express!), they're just like the 313s - bullet proof trains that can go on and on, proving themselves as the backbone of Britain's rail network.

Providing they're not corroding hugely underneath, a further facelift or refurbishment could keep these going for many more years in my opinion. However, I think that if the 315s are like the 313s and have a lot of wasted room at the ends, GA (and FCC) could ultimately do with newer stock that has more internal space - and possibly 2+2 seating.

But that doesn't mean the trains get scrapped - just cascaded to a more suitable location.

Of they are overhuauled and refurbished then the class 315's should be ok for about 5-10 years on the Cardiff Valleys before they are retired. It worked in Yoprkshire before they got brand new EMU's so there is little reason why the same cannot be done in south wales.

That said I do hope they get ride of the pink interiors and install 2 + 2 seating
