I went on a Silverlink 313 today and some of the seat cushions were nowhere to be found. The cushions aren't even attached to the seats, just loosely placed on them. When are these atrocious heaps getting the chop?

You can find some interesting and disgusting things under the seats of Silverlink 313s. I have found 15p, sand pits and mouldy food.

I have travelled on Class 313s before, so here I can rate them. I have only travelled on the WAGN ones about four times (2004). I rated them four out of five. Simply because they were simple units, but they were fairly comfortable and certainly worth travelling on. I even got a driver's eye view in August 2004! These units seem to be perfect for suburban networks, but they'll probably be gone by 2012. Shame isn't it? Well not for the Silverlink ones I suppose, if they've got sandpits and mouldy food under the cushions I won't be surprised if nearly nobody misses the Silverlink trains at all, apart from the multi-coloured livery on the 313 units.

I prefer the ex-WAGN units as their high-back seating is certaintly all that bit more "together" and comfortable.

The TfL website says that the new trains for the North London line and the DC lines are due by 2009.

Just out of curiousity, WHY were you/do you scrabble around uner the seats on clas 313's? Try reading a book, or looking out of the window.

Anyway, a little birdie told me one class 313 has been withdrawn from service. Don't know if it is temporary or permanent! Don't think it had anything to do with what's under the seats though!

313112 hit a tree earlier this year on the West London Line.

I was curious what was under the seat covers of 313s. Who knows what I could be under a seat I am sitting on.

Was just about to say 150s are worse. Blinkin springs.
I think the 150s which have had a decent refurb to 2+2 seats are fine, its just the Central/Silverlink ones which are still so crap inside despite the trip to Doncaster.... NatEx quality!

Arn't 313s the oldest passenger bits in London these days (?, cant be bothered to check), so all you travelcard boyos should be scooping them in as the most rateable stuff!

Yes, I agree. The 314s in the SPT area are similar to 313s, without 3rd rail capabilities. These units are being replaced c2010 I believe with 320s displaced from North Clyde.

Anyway, this family of units in general are coming to the end of their life, and I'm surprised that so many are planned to remain in service, although I can understand that they are the only ones cleared on the Moorgate-Drayton Park line, for example, at the moment. So a replacement on the FCC's GN route would need to be designed to get into the Moorgate tunnels.

Our 313s are normally in good nick(FCC) but are getting mechanically worn...still enjoy driving them though,as I'm nearly always on 365s.Most of our work is 365s at Peterborough

You mean the 320s will cascade to the diagrams currently covered by the 314s
Transport Scotland missed the cutoff to order the next batch of EMUs, which was to tag onto the Class 350s, and so an alternative is now being saught
Rumour is that Class 321s are now the preferred option, when these should become surplus in 2011, and will be a stop-gap measure

Thanks M8 (I do say that a lot ;) ) Yes, that is what I meant.

I hope they can get something new (rather unlikely) for the 314 retirement.

It was hoped that SPT would be given 12 new units, but Transport Scotland missed the deadline for this
However, as you may have seen on the Transport Scotland website, second hand units will be delivered which are 4 cars with stations between :
Glasgow - Paisley - Kilwinning - Largs / Ardrossan / Ayr
being upgraded to cope with 8 car trains during 2008 and 2009

The Class 334s would then be used on the North Clyde services, releasing the Class 320s to the 75mph restricted diagrams (Newton / Neilston / Cathcart Circles / Gourock / Wemyss Bay)
Which would then allow the 314s to be returned back to Angel Trains on expiry of the lease

As the deadline has passed to order new trains, the only alternative now is second hand trains, and Class 321s are looking more likely as a short term solution

M8,

How does this affect the need for new units for the Edinbiurgh-Glasgow via Airdrie & Bathgate and GARL?
Would the 334's work through to Edinburgh / North Berwick?
What about GARL?

DJW, I can confirm that some 334s can probably be used on Berwick routes at the moment. There was a single training run a while back which probably allows drivers from somewhere to drive the 334s to NBerwick and through to Glasgow should a 318 not be available.

The usual unit is a 322 on that route, with a 3188 substituted, AFAIK, if a 318 is not available, then the journey is canceled. i assumed this meant that 334 drivers didn't have the route/traction knowledge in combination, or that the 334 availability was such that there wasn't a spare unit.

Class 318 / 334 / 3xx units will operate the revised Dalmuir - Airdrie - Bathgate - Edinburgh service
This will release Class 158 units with a further cascade releasing Class 170s for the Glasgow - Edinburgh via Shotts

The Class 334s would be cascaded from the Ayrshire services when the 4-car EMUs enter service
Overall between 2009 and 2011 there will be quite a radical shake up of the suburban ScotRail fleets

As I understand it, Edinburgh drivers are trained on Class 318 and 322 only
As a result Class 334s are not permitted beyond Carstairs

Wow, this has gone OT!

Thanks for the update though, the last I'd heard was the new trains for A-B.

Does this mean, though, that 158s will displace 170s? =If so, would this be on the likes of the Newcraighall route?

Me, mark and Jim had a great game on a CT 150 - who can sit on their seat longest before the bugger falls to bits.

I seem to remember I won that?
