314 for me, or how about we make it the PEP Preservation Society, and preserve one of: 313, 314, 315?

i travelled on a class 508 from euston to queens park last wednesday i can say that they are tatty inside much like the first capital connect class 313 on the great northern out of moorgate.

though from what i have been told they are very reliable mutiple units so i would be nice to get some preserved when they are withdrawn

I randomly ended up joining the Facebook group for this last night. I ws flabbergasted when I learnt they were as old as my beloved class!

I find it strange how they first came out in BR blue that's a lot older than I first thought.

I would also like to see a Class 507 preserved, a PEP Preservation Society sounds like a great idea covering all the class.

Cheeky bugger! All the 313s on the GN with FCC have been refurbished with new floors, new seat covers and only look tatty when the general public treat them as bins on rails with their feet on the seats, leaving their rubbish everywhere etc...

I am happy though with your later text on them being reliable!

Mind you some ( Not all) of the class 313's i have travelled on from Moorgate to Drayton park have been a bit grubby in siide and i do agree that a lot of it is because people just dump their rubbish.

As for them being reliable i have yet to see a failed class 313, so much so i hope that when the great western mainline is electrified to swansea that arriva try and nick either some class 313's or some class 319s for use on the cardiff - swansea local services.

313s do break down from time to time, and some still seem to have buggered thermostats (last week I was on one with the heating on, despite it being some 25 degrees outside) but besides that, they're clean, comfortable and actually look surprisingly modern.

If FCC ever opted to rip out the seats and go for 2+2 to allow more commuters on each train (bear in mind, they're mainly used for little else other than inner-suburban runs), I reckon they could keep them going for years more.

Not that I'd want them too, as I'd quite like a new train with air conditioning and toilets!

We still have 314s here running regular services in Glasgow or sometimes out the Inverclyde lines. They're great although rather aged inside - never been refurbished, and now they want to keep them on until 2015.

I would love to have a 314 all to myself <D

Used to love commuting on 313s to Barnet in the late 70s. The suspension was about the best i have experienced on any train. They still do the job sufficiently, and feel good for another 30 years:D. I always felt the 315s were a cheap imitation :D

Aren't the 315s the exact same train, but with no 3rd rail pickup and - thanks to One - a horrid multicoloured interior and low-back seating?

So, yes, a cheap imitation!!!

They have different windows on 315s
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
And 313s had Low back seating anyway, but FCCs 313 have been refurbed

It's a home from home for me reminding me of one of my favourite EMUs, the 313s which isn't a surprise as I work with them and they belong to the same family!

Apart from having an extra car, no 3rd rail shoes and slightly different traction electronics (Cl313's still have camshaft controls where Cl315's have thyristors), they are EXACTLY the same trains inside and out. The only difference with the windows is that the Cl315 PTSO coach has an extra "slit" window below the pan.

Well, at least they were identical until the Cl315's had a proper refurb and gained a number of modifications and updates that improved their reliability further.

The new colour scheme presumably ensuring passengers decide to walk instead, thus reducing the passenger loadings, the use of the doors and anything else that may potentially go wrong?!

I do hope that they'll be refreshed again soon by National Express, now that One is ancient history. I still think that the 317/6s are the best (on the former WA trains), although they're looking a bit tatty now on account of their age.

I never liked the 315s, especially with the horrid low-back seats. I can never remember the 313s with the low-seats (Silverlink excepted) and I'm so glad that Wagn did at least do them properly.

But they haven't gone overboard with the First colours, as they might have done (and have done on other franchises).

I actually think that the only ones that might be considered over the top are the 319s. The 313s still have plenty of yellow inside!!

And nor have the NXEA units.

It's only the draught screens that have been painted pink with the rest of the interior grey. If anything, it's a more sober scheme than the pre-refurb BR interiors that the Cl313's still have, with a huge expanse of BR Warning Yellow on the insides of the doors, the draught screens and all the way over the ceiling.

Class 313 Interior
Class 315 Interior

Or perhaps you just don't like pink. In which case, it's probably a good thing that FCC restrict it's use to the outside of their trains. ;)

I cant why the ones at stewarts lane cant be used by SWT for the lymington pier branch, instead of using a class 158 which could be deployed elsewhere doing a better job.
