Not bad at all! Probably the best of all the 'PEP' design refurbishments - although i haven’t been on Mersyrails yet so don't fully quote me!

Couple of things though - Firstly, i thought the 313s were due to receive the original comfy seats from the original Electrostar batch - rather than new seats?

Secondly, i see who ever refurbished these didn’t give the compressors a good overhaul...nor did they get round to doing any wheel reprofiling or replacing...Thump Thump Thump Thump of those wheel flats again!

Looks quite smart...however, I've never been able to completely get over the comedy window/seat alignment in 313s...the pillars are always exactly halfway between the facing seats (I understand it's the doors that force this to be the case, but I still think it looks ridiculous).

What does PEP mean? I understand these traind don't have the mk3 style body shell is it something to do with that?

PEP I think was "Passenger Evaluation Prototype" and was the basis for the 313, 314 etc etc. The actual PEPs had a better looking front end but the production versions were given slab fronts ( probably to save money? ) instead.

I have heard them referred to as "Mk 2½" as they are a sort of half way house between the Mk2 and Mk3 bodyshell designs. As I understand it they are of fully integral construction like the Mk3s but have an actual structure closer to the Mk2s.

A pretty good illustration of design evolution, wouldn't you say?

Edited to add: Oh, was it EP as in the brakes then? Thank Starry. :)

They do look good. Unfortunately I'm the only person in the world who preferred the low back seating and the associated increase in visibility.

Not really as it's the same I prefer for the FCC 313s, still can't complain as they got 365 seating when they changed from low back to high back seating.

Still, if Southern managed to get that kind of a refurb out of them then lord knows why FCC couldn't, :(

I went on one yesterday and will more than likely be on it today too, it's like a totally new train on the inside. They don't seem to have the DVA or CIS working yet, but it's nice apart from the terrible seat alignment (I have an idea for how they could fix the seats, I'll draw something up later.

very, very similar refurb to the merseyrail 507/508's, but looks to be less extensive.

The seats are the same, ours dont have armrests though.

I like it, nice colour scheme!

I like the look of this refurb, put's the FCC ones to shame, the 3+2 seating in them just doesn't work as it's pretty much impossible to sit opposite someone without your legs being interlocked and you feel like your sitting on the floor.

Have the pantographs been removed from the refurbished 313s?
Sorry if this has been mentioned before but why did southern choose the 313s over the 508s?

Yes the Pantographs are gone off the refurbished 313s.

Also, for a start there is only 12 - 15 508s in store?

Whereas there is 20 (or so) 313s avaliable for Southern.

Yes, The southern 313s have also been fitted with a dc traction bus to reduce the danger of becoming gapped and to reduce arcing at high speed.
As a consequence the ac cabling has been removed so they are to all intents dc only now.

The 508s were horrendously unreliable with Southeastern and basically had been run in to the ground. The use of 508s on the coastway where they have periods at high speed would have potentially caused chaos on the Brighton Main Line because of delys to Coastway to London services.

Of course it remains to be seen how the 313s fare.

And only 7-11 of the 15 available are ready for service.

Don't forget some of the ex-Southeastern ones are knackered, 508212 was a Christmas tree for years at GLM.

They are very nice inside. It would be nice to see that with FCC colours (I hate the Southern green colours!) but it's a bit unfair to say that it puts the FCC refreshed ones to shame, as they do their job just fine.

I'd much prefer 2+2 seating though, and think this would work better than 3+2 even in the peaks, but FCC is opting to strengthen most (all?) of the 3-car services to 6-car by December, and run more services, so I think that will suffice.

I've never been on a 313, but it's hard to believe that that's one! It's really nice and fresh inside, with comfortable looking seats. Well done to Southern on what is undoubtedly a miracle makeover.

The best internal refurb of any PEP-based unit, hands down. My only complaint would be the window frames, which could do with replacement.

Southern's uses a great balance of colours and the addition of armrests and carpet means it easily beats Merseyrail's refurb. Theirs are looking tatty inside and out thanks to a lack of care. Let's hope Southern look after them!

377s starting to look worn espec those with grey seats- noticed a few torn seats plus carpets frequently are covered in mud or grime

personally, although merseyrails units did go through a tatty phase they are much better now.
the armrests are nice, but for the type of work the merseyrail units do they and the carpet would be unsuitable and soon worn out (the carpet).
like I said the merseyrail refurbs are much more extensive, the interiors were completely removed and rebuilt, these just have new seats and carpets!

oh and this one hasn't had its pantograph removed? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1S7D_cWHoqA&feature=related

And yet the Southern ones still look better IMO. Indeed many of the internal panels were removed on the Merseyrail units, but I'm not sure just how much better that was. Of course the internal coupler doors were replaced, but that's still quite limited work. Merseyrail units haven't had the windows touched either, which is a pretty major flaw.

Cost-wise Merseyrail spent some £33 million on refurbishing 59 units, Southern £6 million on 19. That cost Merseyrail about £560,000 per set and Southern about £316,000. I'd say given the relatively small difference in appearance between the two, that's quite a good saving from Southern.

I wouldn't say those on Merseyrail improved much in terms of cleanliness actually - faded seat moquettes that don't wear well. Having said that, they're a lot better inside than out: they're probably the worst kept trains in the country externally.

Pantographs are being removed at Stewarts Lane as part of the refurbishment programme. The first eight units to Lovers Walk (101/202/203/204/205/207/108/212) retained their pantographs; those to arrive after have lost them.
