Hertford North for example can take 7 cars on both Up Hertford/Down Hertford but only 6 cars in Down Bay - Hertford could be extended but at the moment only Platform 1 looks feasible and that's only because it can be extended southwards by a few meters if that to take a 8 car.

Going north with Platform 2/3 will require a lot of work due to the bridge north of the station but bridges can always be replaced.

The bay is the same length as the other platforms at Hertford-they could just about squeeze in a 7th.

We stop 6 car trains about a coach length from the buffers there and there is still plenty of room London end. Same in all platforms.

Stock from a similar time with less modern equipment will proberbly still be soldiering on well past then into the 2030s...

For example, they use a Westcode brake system rather than the old twin pipe systems if I'm reading the specs right, so aren't as old fassioned as they look.

I assume you're talking HSTs/Mk3s?

Anyway I have to agree there is no reason that the 313s could go on for a lot longer. The Mk1 EMUs were not far off 50 years old when they were finally retired.

I'm on about other stock actually; but the MkIIIs show my point, I beleive these are dual piped, but don't know if they use local brake controllers or just westinghouse tripple valves (if anyone cares to enlighten me). But there is stock on LUL that could well still be going in 20 years of a similar age and construction (mechanically). And given the state of some very similar outgoing stock, structural repairs would be plenty enough to keep them goign another 20 - 30 years.
