Well these wonderfull unit's are nearly extinct and well nothing at all is being done........
Is there any interested parties or individuals maybe here or elsewhere who want to save at least some examples.

So yeah basically I am part of a group who are aiming to save examples of the class and we are already un derway securing a location and a plan for thre preservation of the unit.
But we need members so if you or anyone you know have an interest in saving one of these unit's and be activily part of the whole preservation of one of these fantastic unit contact me for more details.

I would've thought £5k was for a vehicle not a unit. If it's a unit, you can more than double that price for moving all 3 or 4 vehicles by road. That's the easy bit over, and the hard work can begin!

Finding a (provisional) home was the really hard part - especially as VEPs and the like were all available at the same time and Mk1 design units were slightly more palatable to preserved lines than Mk2 ones...

OK we have worked out it to be 3000 per vehicle and 5000 to move the lot (I could be wrong).
We are currently figuring out how to dispose of all the blue asbestos present.
ASnd we may have a storage location but nothing is definate yet.

£3000 per vehicle sounds a bit large, considering theres a DMU going for £6000 for 3 cars!

Try Heanor haulage, they move everything for us at the NVR.

If you tell them they are going for preservation they may allow them to go cheap. When the DFR got 1392/1499, I know it obtained them fairly cheaply - it was the cost of moving them that was the problem. There are some units (as far as I know) still stored at shoeburyness which may be a good starting point. Thing to remember though - is look at what happens to units when they are not safely stored - 1392/1499 are prime examples, these units (certainly 1499) were imaculate when they arrived and myself and a couple of collegues kept this unit in full running order, until they got attacked. This was due simpley to where they were kept. Storage is a key issue with anything like this - please make sure you check this out as I for one would not like to see this happen to anyone else!

Would easily be 5k a coach, probably more with the scrap prices. You will be looking at over 20k for the 4 viechles of the unit and then 2k each to shift em by road at least, unless you could get it on the back of another move already going to the site you want the viechle out of, hence making it cheaper?!

I remember the twin towers at the old Wembley Stadium being sold for £1. The problem was the buyer was required to arrange (and pay for) removal, transport and storage.

The buyer never collected them.

Removal and storage of a 4 car EMU is likely to be pricier than buying the damn thing to start off with. If you have to factor asbestos removal into the cost (check this hasn't already been done, as I'm pretty sure all contaminated vehicles were dealt with or withdrawn under BR in the late 1980's/early 1990's), this is only going to push the price up even further.

Good luck, but I wonder if you'll be able to successfully preserve more than just one or two vehicles. As far as I'm aware, only the former Ilford Cl306 "Shenfield" unit is the only complete overhead EMU in preservation (and that's in covered storage at Kineton). Otherwise it's just one or two vehicles here and there, like the Cl308 driving trailer at Walthamstow.

Erm, you're welcome to store them in my sidings in Cheshire... bit run down, but still signalled and accessible...
