Would be interested to learn more about what this does. Does it create a full 3d survey of the trackside structures?

Just a 2D survey, measuring the clearances. That's the Balfour Beatty LaserFlex system at work there. It'll build up 2D picture of the structure gauge from the top of railhead all around the train, with measurements.

Mk2 DBSO, specialist optical car, 2 x Mk1 for instrumentation and messing, plus a Mk2 barrier and a class 31.

I've seen it come past my house. I know what it is because the whole house is lit up by it!
