I was waiting for the (late running) bus into Derby outside the marina yesterday when Findern AHB crossing fired up for the passage of the 1342 Derby - Crewe, and then a 222 rumbled across.

Meanwhile in XCworld I've seen a 220 on a Birmingham - Nottingham service calling at Willington a year or two back (I was waiting on the opposite platform at the time).

So, (a) please tell me that I'm not seeing things in my old age and (b) are such workings commonplace?

The 222 yesterday was to add capacity on the route as Leicester City were playing at Stoke.
A voyager is often used on the 1739 BHM-DBY service as a substitute when a 170 or Senior Conductor is not available to work the service

222s get used on the Nottingham-Liverpool leg of the Norwich-Liverpools on Grand National Day. Similarly, I've seen them used on Derby-Crewe for extra capacity when the southern WCML has been blocked.

There was also when XC used one of their 220s for the Olympic Sailing at Weymouth in 2012 (opperating shuttles to/from Bournemouth during the day)

There's a 222 on Leicester - Lincoln services on some days at the moment covering for a shortage of EMT Sprinter units.

Should be out Mondays and Fridays if all goes according to plan. Usually a 222/1.

Sometimes XC 220/1s work Cardiff to Nottingham services if 170 shortage. They are to be found on the Cardiff route on occasions such as Cheltenham Race Days or large events at Cardiff if XC supplement their services.

Thanks for the replies - I've seen 4 car formations of various Class 15x stuff on Saturdays on this route on several occasions (Uttoxeter race days?) but if EMT currently have a shortage of them then that would explain the 222.

The 1739 ex-Birmingham (due Willington 1820) also ties in, since I would have been waiting for the 1821 going the other way.

I saw the 222 passing Uttoxeter on it's way back to Derby at about 12.10 on Saturday, I imagine it was taken off after the match had finished and most fans had presumably returned mid-afternoon (12.15 kick off)

In the old days, BR would have run a special, Leicester - Stoke using the Castle Donington line but it's not really practical now.

A 5 car 221 was working the Leicester to Birmingham service some weekends ago now, presumably due to 170 unavailability.

222s have also been used very occasionally on Crewe - Derby when there is horse racing at Uttoxeter.

It's not common and not in the grand scheme of things, but it does happen. EMT for example, are refurbishing their usual Ivanhoe Line stock, so spare long distance units can be seen covering for them. Also, 156s have been known to cover for Meridian units between Kettering and Sheffield. I've seen a YouTube video of a XC 170 at Manchester Piccadilly (exclusively a Voyager/Super Voyager route) too.
