Elsewhere on social media there is a report that 222004 had a passenger (external) door become insecure and then detach, whilst in traffic today.

Has anyone got any further details?

Amended following request from Mod'

222004 is ironically the train causing issues at the minute, being stuck at Market Harborough with a door that has become detached.

Above is a report that 222004 had a passenger (external) door become insecure and then detached, whilst in traffic today.

Has anyone got any further details.

That's pretty much it. The doors were released at Market Harborough and one of them became detached from the mechanism. Unit was sent back to the depot having been sat there for a couple of hours

Nowhere near as interesting as the Desborough incident in 2006 then, at least this one wasn't moving at the time

For sure not anything like Desborough.
I'm now told it was something as simple as a door dislodged from its runner by luggage. Caused a delay as they need to make the door secure to continue.

It caused quite a delay when it blocked the Down Main for 3 hours, some trains ended up 70+ minutes late. It was eventually secured and sent back to Etches Park depot

What that the incident where the axel collapsed and derailed one of the intermediate carriages, or something else?

Different incident, both involved the RAIB though so that might be why you're confusing them

So what was the Desborough incident?
Sorry should have explained, a Sheffield service was at high speed in the Desborough area when an exterior door fully opened. The cause was a fault occurring, caused in the manufacturing process

On 10 June 2006 an exterior door on a train from St Pancras to Sheffield came open while the train was moving. The door came open on the class 222 Meridian just north of Kettering, causing the train’s brake to apply automatically. However, the driver initially overrode this as indications in his cab were ambiguous, and he was uncertain what had happened. When the driver realised the situation, he made a controlled brake and brought the train to a stand at Desborough summit, six miles north of Kettering station. The door was then closed and secured, and the train continued to the next station, where it was taken out of service.

There were no injuries or material damage as a result of the incident. However, the state of the door after the train departed from Luton station presented a real and unprotected risk to those on board the train.

The immediate cause of the incident was a malfunction of the door lock switch, which detects the status of the door lock, when the doors were opened at Luton station. This meant the door was both unlocked and had no closing force applied to it from the door motor. There were also nine contributory factors to the incident.

RAIB has made nine recommendations as a result of the report, aimed at:

the design, development and manufacturing of door components and the door locking system
training and procedures for on-board staff
the design of and guidance for the use of emergency brakes.

So what was the Desborough incident?
Door opened at speed due to foreign matter being present in a microswitch when it was manufactured, allowing the door mechanism to release pressure in certain circumstances if I remember the cause correctly.

The driver overrode the brake demand due to unclear cab indications. The train was eventually stopped after a passenger reported the open door.

Oh wow, thanks, first time I've heard about that incident!

Having a quick skim read of the RAIB report, the mechanical part of the door mechanism on modern units is certainly very complex.

The most worrying element of the Desborough 2006 incident was the cctv, showing people ( including children) walking passed the open door, as if it was normal.
Learning- don't rely on the public as the primary source to tell you when something is wrong.

One passenger did report that it was open (para 64) before the crew noticed. Somewhere (and I can't find it in the report) I read that this initial report was misinterpreted by the crew as a vestibule door being open and not acted upon initially.

You're correct. The passenger reported to a First Class Host about the door being open and the FCH thought the passenger was referring to one of the internal doors playing up.

Also rather concerningly the report states that the FCH was unable to pull the pass com despite twice attempting to do so, after they realised that it was actually an exterior door which was open.

I would have thought that would have broken the door/brake interlock and initiated an emergency brake application.

How on earth can luggage cause a door to open while the train is moving? I thought the doors hooked in as they closed on one side and locked on the other.

Often Voyagers (more broadly speaking as Meridians are part of the family) are full and standing and that could have been numerous people stood against the door.

Hope the RAIB are investigating this.

I didn't think it opened while moving, not in this latest incident.

I read it that an excess amount of luggage caused the door to dislodge from its runner during the closing process at the station call.

The door didn't open while the train was in motion.

If this is referring to today's incident, do you have a link to a report?
