There is virtually no risk of the 221s going for scrap in the foreseeable future, the short lease may well be as Arriva would like to keep their options open for a transfer to XC.
Grand Central's track access agreement only lasts till December 2026. I'd expect the future stock to be either 221s or something like a battery equipped 397. The 180s aren't going to last much longer.

There has indeed been a thermal incident. Smoke reported but nothing more. I believe options are being weighed up as to whether a rescue unit is needed or not
Caused 1450 Bradford to Kings Cross and 1948 Kings Cross to Bradford to both be cancelled today as a result. The 221s can’t come soon enough, reliability of the 180s is absolutely abysmal.

Are there any services booked specifically for 221 operation? I'm trying to get a 180 for haulage over next (long) weekend.

Not yet, Was dragged back to Barton on the 8th June by 37601 and hasn't left since I think.
From when I went past earlier on a TPE, it appears to now be in Holbeck sidings. Hopefully someone will be able to confirm as I was unable to see the unit number

From my experience, it seems that the use of the 221 only as far as Wakefield Kirkgate is causing a bit of a mess regarding passengers for stations beyond - on the 16.27 yesterday there were quite a few people with tickets for the 14.56 who had been allowed to board the 16.27 as it was running all the way (with 180104), many of whom attempted to claim their 14.56 seat reservations! The gentleman sitting next to me said that "this train is always a problem for overcrowding" - it was certainly close to standing room only when it left Kings Cross.

When will 221s be rolled out the full way to Bradford?

According to their Twitter feed this will be until the 8th September. In the meantime they have issued advice on how to get to/from Wakefield Kirkgate for the shorter services, but invariably this means changing at Kirkgate & Leeds. I can't see this being a very popular option as it adds to extra connections as well as up to an hour or more for some journeys. Details are on their updates pages:

It's probably there for crew training for depot Drivers, as from mid September when the HSTs go, 2 XC Voyagers will be serviced at Holbeck on nights.
Interesting, as there are currently no depot drivers at Holbeck. Is it confirmed anywhere that there will actually be depot drivers or is it just an assumption you've made?

No assumption mate, ROGs will be providing the shed drivers. Route learning/briefing for Leeds XC drivers has started this week.

Too far from an HST...
The Voyager service was ran by a 180 today
Any reason for this? Seems a bit strange to have it shortened when the limitation, being the voyager, was removed from the equation

Well it’s now temporarily timetabled to terminate at Wakefield Kirkgate so it did as timetabled. If a 158 covered for a 150 on the morning TfW service that terminates at Shrewsbury, they wouldn’t just send it to Pwllheli just because it had stock cleared for it today.

Apparently 221142’s now in GC livery, but still retains the red roof

This image shows the DMFO of 221142 at Holbeck depot wearing full Grand Central livery with black and orange stripe. The roof is full red.

Didn't think I'd ever say this, but would prefer the grimy roof over the red one.
