I was at Birmingham New Street a week or two ago, getting a Cross Country Voyager to Leamington. It was a 4-car class 220, but one of the carriages had the outside frame bogies of a 221 (so I assume it was a 221 carriage).

Does anyone know how this 220/221 hybrid set came to be?

According to Wikipedia:

In 2014 CrossCountry set 220007 suffered fire damage to Coach C (607 vehicle), making the vehicle written off beyond economic repair. They decided to take Coach B out of 221135 to replace 60707.

I'm not sure the vehicle has been written off - just a temporary arrangement until it is fixed. It was reported on here too

Its on wikipedia, they never let the truth get in the way do they!

If wikipedia said it was raining I would have to stand outside and get p+ssed wet through before I believed it.

Too right! I did look at the Wiki article and it isn't cited so definite pinch of salt required!

If wikipedia said it was raining and it wasn't, I would edit the article to say so, ideally with a verifiable source.

220007 will be reunited with its missing bit shortly. It has been repaired and is awaiting transport to CZ I was informed this morning. Ironically prior to taking 007 off the shed

Just a tip. Not everybody knows where CZ is or even where to find it. The Mods recently pointed this out and suggested the first time it is used in a thread, the full location should be shown.

For the avoidance of doubt, CZ is Central Rivers Depot (Barton Under Needswood) - not the most obvious code in the world, it has to be said!
