I was standing on the northbound (trains to Banbury) platform at South Ruislip late Friday evening when a a set of four Class 20 coupled together sped Southwards ( in the London direction ). They were on the very same track which is used by the SRU stopper. The Class 20s were pulling several of the yellow Metronet ballast wagons and a rusty old tanker. Anyone know where they were going ? Seemed very odd that they were heading towards London but on the wrong track ?

Sounds very much like the 6E20 West Ruislip LUL depot - Peterborough GBRf stock transfer move. At a guess the routing would be West Ruislip - Greenford - Acton Mainline - NLL - Camden Road - ECML - Peterborough.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Jon.
You're spot on. Managed to find a clip on Youtube which was filmed late evening at West Hampsted NLL.

Just a final point. Wouldn't it be awkward to get onto the ECML via Camden Road & NLL ? I thought it may have gone via the Gospel Oak - Barking line and caught the ECML nr Hornsey.

The 20s retire to West Ruislip LUL depot after they've delivered their 'S' stock to Neasden. The consist that you saw was there from Thursday until Friday night. When I passed on Friday evening at about 18:20 the 20s were just heading out of West Ruislip depot onto the headshunt that gives them access back into West Ruislip station.
