The first batch of class 20/3s for Direct Rail Services, 20301 - 305, were refurbished by Brush at Loughborough in 1995/6. The second batch, 20306 - 315, were refurbished at Doncaster in 1997/98.
The locos retained the same engines and traction motors (though presumably refurbished), but were fitted with twin fuel tanks, giving an increased fuel capacity compared to standard locos, an increased top speed of 75mph against 60mph, and were train air brake only. There were also a number of cosmetic changes made to the bodywork and modern standard three piece light clusters were fitted.
