Class 20 At Hope Cement Works

G'day everyone,

Just curious to know whether a class 20 still serves the Hope cement works and more importantly whether it still retains a silencer to keep the local villagers happy?

Quick search reveals its 20168 and is owned by Harry Needle rail ltd. So presumably leased to lafarge.

I popped by there recently and 20168 was still there BUT 08924 was being offloaded from a road trailer

the two I saw were blue, paired up just south of St James's bridge at the London end of the station, there was a 47/57 there a couple of times

There's more than one locomotive active at the Hope cement works complex at any time: When I worked there in 2009, there was one class 20, an 08 and a couple of industrials used on the trip workings up to Earles sidings and for shunting around the site.

Thanks very much for this, really interesting stuff. Although Earles sidings always seem to be busy I didn't realise that there was enough traffic to warrant more than one loco. Just out of interest does the cement works still receive deliveries of coal via Earles sidings?

Along with 08924 and 20168, there is also HNRC owned 20906 at Hope which carries all over white and a number 3

Hi Mate, as Sam said yes it's still there, aswell as the other loco's mentioned. I work at Earles sidings often on the MAS (Manchester to Sheffield line) and I see it shunting regulary. Here's a video I took of it on Monday.

Many thanks for posting this video; really interesting to watch. As an aside I'm assuming that NR maintain the line leading to the cement works and that all loco's operating within the complex have to run to their standards? Also, who provides the drivers for shunting within the works and trip workings to Earles Sidings?

The signal box must be one of the most interesting mechanical boxes in the country with a busy mainline and all the shunting that takes place.

HNRC provide 08924, 20168 and 20905 for the shunting, I don't know who owns the industrial shunters though.
08924 and 20168 are listed in the industrial locomotive section of the latest Platform 5 pocket book, so I don't think they have all the warning equipment required for use on the mainline but I could be wrong....

Hi,

Great vid, :)

On top of what Richmondcommu has already asked about the coal trains, are there anymore flows into the works, such as stone for any filtering process in the cycle to produce cement.
I know power station's take in coal, oil, biomass, limestone and also take gypsum out.

NR only maintain the mainline, and one of the sidings/loop (nearest to the main line) and the dimond crossings with double slips at either end as well a some other points. The rest of the sidings belong to freightliner but I am not to sure who maintains the single line into the cement works. I know 20168 as already mentioned somewhere belongs to HNRC and is leased to lafarge and I am pretty sure the driver of 20168 is supplied by Lafage. I have only ever seen coal go in and cement come out in tankers, other materials may go in and out but I haven't caught them as yet.

I have seen a strange looking shunter come out of the cement works once or twice with blue circle livery called Blue John I have no idea what it is but it's the only one I have ever seen. I have seen all the other loco's at the cement works, there is a public footpath that takes you through the grounds of the cement works and you can get up close to all the loco's. I'll pay a trip and get some pictures for you, that shunter is in the link below.

Is the other industrial shunter sill there (Hunslet no. 8805 'Laura') ?

This loco hauled several mini-railtours within the cement works during a weekend in 2007 in connection with a class 20 'fiftieth anniversary' gala at Barrow Hill.
