I travelled on a Class 755 last week and was rather impressed by the train - both the interior and the power arrangement. I couldn't help but compare them with Northern's 195s and wonder whether Northern should have gone with an order for 755s themselves, instead of 195s? The layout and quality of the interior is partly down to what the TOC specifies so I suppose Northern 755s may have had a different interior than the GA 755s have, but the power arrangement of diesel engines and generators for 755s seems superior to the diesel-only 195s (not including the potential new hybrid 195s in the future) and more appropriate for the non or partly-electrified medium distance routes which Northern run. What do others think?

Northern certainly has a number of routes ideal for bimodes. There are 769s, but they are not particularly good. So yes, I would agree, though to some extent it was "cheap or not at all".

It will be interesting to compare the 755s against the Welsh version, which will have more doors to improve dwell times.

Something like the Flirt would be ideal for some of the Northern routes which are 75% under the wires. Keep the 195s for the routes which have hardly any wires but have a few stops (Manchester to Leeds, Wigan via Swinton, Liverpool via Warrington etc)
