Eco-Mode also seems to be invoked between Salford Crescent and Bolton and Bolton to Chorley depending on the stopping pattern.
All the official Siemens/fTPE detail on Eco-Mode always mentions that maximum power is used to get the train to cruising speed in the first place before software shuts down engines at the request of the driver. However, I've frequently been on 185s between Bolton and Preston which undertake the whole journey on only 2 engines even from rest at a station/signal stop.
If this is more widespread, presumably fTPE are confident timetables can be kept to operating at 66% power within these geographical regions which then begs the question could the journeys not be undertaken a few minutes quicker (to the benefit of passengers) if 100% power was used?
Like others, I seriously question the continued shut-down/start-up policy Eco-Mode requires and the damage this must be doing internally to the QSK19s. One can only assume the fewer operating engine hours when shut down outweights the disadvantages of shut down/start up cycles. Thinking aloud, I presume the on board software will rotate the engines shut down so it's not always the same engine starting up.
