Class 185 change ends

I'm trying to check a figure I have been given about the minimum amount of time it takes to change ends on a Class 185.

I've previously been told that it takes a minimum of 5 minutes due to the computer power-down and restart at the other end, does anyone have a confirmed time, how does this compare to other similar vehicles such as a 158?

I'm sure I have seen prompter reversals than that before now...I'm not sure how complex their systems are compared some of the other units which I believe can take quite some time

Are you wanting to know the actual time taken, or how long you should allow in the timetable? (if the latter, I'll move it to the timetabling forum )

The minimum times for a reversal should be in the Rules of the Plan, and should be more than the physical minimum time to actually change ends.

I think the 185s have less than five minutes in Piccadilly on some services, so changing ends must be quicker than five minutes. I imagine the time on a 158 is not much more than the time it takes to walk down the train.

The timetabled minimum is 4mins - I'm not sure how that corresponds to the reality on the ground (either how long it would take a normal person, or how long the unions say it would take one of their drivers!)

The driver always needs a couple of minutes should he have to write a fault in the repair book before he leaves the cab. Often he wont need it so it takes less time in reality.

Slightly off topic, when a TPE service arrives at Man Picc from Newcastle, Middlesbrough, etc, is it usually the same driver who takes it to Manchester Airport ?

4 mins to change ends. Different if your booked to mobilse the unit but you wouldn't do this if your just changing ends.

Depends on the 158 you're comparing it to as well. An ATW 158 takes a bit longer die to the ERTMS.

And GSMR set up takes a bit of time too. Especially it's gone into "sleep" mode.

At York yesterday it didn't take very long at all!! Detrained from 185 133 as 185 117 entered platform four going the opposite direction to where it was headed and we were on our way in a couple of minutes and that was with a load up from empty!

True story.

Salford Crescent. Double unit. Man Airport-York, on diversion. One driver in each end. One going home to Man Vic after finishing shift, other was the driver going through to York. At Picc, they agreed that as soon as they arrived at the Crescent, one would put it in neutral, key out and the one in the other end would do the opposite as soon as the signal went to green, removing a 3-5 minute hole in the running time during the reversal move.

Good plan to be fair.

Except.

As the train is sailing out of the station the unamused guard (now a driver) who was switching units is stood on the platform watching her train sail away ......So in essence, this proves the procedure can be done in seconds.

Setting the train up does take a few minutes, as the train does it's own door test, systems test etc, but not changing ends.
