Class 185 cascade suggestions

Much appreciated. 6 car 185s are a nightmare at Dore & Totley. They can draw up at the signal and two carriages are out of the platform because it was shortened in 1985. Plans to restore and add a second 6 car platform have been kicking around for decades and should have been completed by December 2018.

Why a temporary extended platform couldn't be added is down to expense. Until at least 2022/23 the problem will persist. Curious how a crisis gets results, like when Network Rail produced a new station in weeks at Workington.

I had noted it seems to be a fairly regular problem!

I'm sure we had a little chat on this forum about this before. cue saudi/iran and about 1/3 the world oil supply going kaputt.
who now is of the belief that "martial law will never happen"?

when this one bites then we won't be worrying too much about niceties. the transport system needs to operate, and WILL operate.

this potentially is a SHTF situation if it gets out of control.
The army says we need X platforms here or there to move infantry, they will be in place in 48hrs.

Locally at D&T it has been suggested getting a local contractor to quote for such a wooden extension and paying for it ourselves! Get it prefabricated and done in a couple of nights, max. Oh no, all the permits that would need! Doesn't bear thinking of. Still a lot cheaper than getting ASDO to work.

= 51 total units!

It seems as if maintenance is treated as a luxury here. I think the max availability at the moment is 46/51 and that's only on a Friday.

I'm quite aware of how the train plan currently works. My post was clearly to indicate that there was no requirement for the Cl 185s to be cascaded elsewhere. In reality, we all know that not 'every' Hull/Cleethorpes/Stopper would be 6 car and there would be a mix of 3 and 6 car diagrams, utilising units off AK during the day to switch capacity around as required.

My long-term dream mentioned at the end of the post

Cl 802: LIV - EDB, MIA - NCL, MIA - MBR (Saltburn)
Cl 397: MIA - EDB, MIA - GLC, LIV - GLC
MkVa: LIV - SCA, MAN - HUL
Cl 185: MIA - CLE, MAN - HUD - LDS, LIV - NOT

would rely on having the following 185 stock:

14 units for CLE - MIA
14 units for LIV - NOT
8 units for MAN - LDS stopper
= 36 units

but this would be reliant on a further order of 8 more units (most likely Cl 802)

If anyone knows what is actually happening with the 185 cascade, and wishes to update us, you are very welcome to create a thread in Traction & Rolling stock to keep us up to date with actual developments Feel free to mention this thread in your post, and please alert us if people post in the wrong thread (the earlier the report is made the easier it will be to rectify the issue).

To be fair they aren't bad trains. Seems a shame to waste them. However they are very heavy and inefficient so I can see why potential uses would be limited.

But they work well on the gradient-filled TransPennine Route. 6 car operation is a very, very good idea. Even if you somehow integrate them into a ‘Common Pool’ whereby they are relatively neutrally branded and Northern and TPE can use them...

Agreed, keep them on Transpennine routes (take note of routes) as they were designed for them.

Probably because, as previously mentioned, they'll still end up with TPE.

No. Nottingham, Leicester and Derby appear in the PIS as destinations



That of course is perfectly feasible, after all the 158s had over 900 destinations programmed in to the original PIS and some of them were truly outrageous! XD

What were the worst ones? I remember a great thread on class 158 destination codes many years back that listed Hertford North as one! Which of course, is completely ridiculous.
