Vernon Barker, TPE big boss.
185103? That's "my" 103! What was she doing that's so noteworthy?
I remember a press release coming out about two years ago stating TPE 'was looking to secure extra rolling stock (class 180's) for the new Manchester-Scotland' to quote it. This was the thing that announced TPE winning the ex-Virgin Cross Country route to Scotland. Nothing more came of that apart from the rumours about the TPE/FSR joint share of the units that were doing the rounds early last year.
Hmmm you learn something new everyday. Can anyone explain the background? Since apart from when they were considered DMU's I can;t see how the two are at all similar.

they weren't fully fixed obviously. Unless you mean the individual PCs weren't counted as locos (well they aren't now really!) as they were all 253XXX and 254XXX.

Just to confirm things, is it definate Class 180s are coming to northern, being used on Manchester Vic - Blackpool services?

British Rail considered the HST to be a Multiple Unit, the power cars having the regional letter next to thier number like coaching stock did ie W43001. The class 253 was the Western Region 2+8 & the class 254 was the Eastern region 2+9. Another minor difference between the two classes were that class 253 had E70 brakes and class 254 had DW2 brakes. This didnt prevent them from interworking with each other though.
They are counted as locos now. Hence the class 43 classification. But when HSTs were first built, they were pretty much fully fixed. Hence the unit classification.

An interesting sight, will be even more so to see them in Huddersfield if they do end up other this way. What is the current status of this aspect?
