On Pendos, the TM's office is in the centre of SC, next to the shop, to make it easier for all passengers to be able to contact one of the members of staff onboard.

This is because there are generally members of staff based in FC, in coach K, even on weekends, travelling pass, but there's always a team of staff based in FC on weekdays, which is why the TM is based away from FC- so all passengers generally have a member of staff not too far away.

Eh? I thought Desiros in common with most other stock had panels at vestibules all through the train? I'd hope so, unless LM guards open the doors by magic whilst stood in vestibules...

321s Also have this, at least the ex-Silverlink ones do.

Is that like the Pendolino's dya mean?? Like where the guard van is on there??

I am not completely familiar with the Pendos but it is like a small office with a desk and communication equipment. Thats it really. If you ever get a chance to use a 350 or a 450 have a look for it

Whilst I believe the 350s still have the "office" space they are not used by London Midland. The guards use the rear cab or the panels by the doors

No they don't - the guards have to return to the cab to release doors. I don't think any old BREL stock have this capability, unless they've been refurbed.

No sorry you're wrong. I've seen it many times when the guard has opened up a panel in the vestibule.

While on the subject of 321 door controls! Apparently the ex Silverlink and NXEA 321s CANNOT be mixed in service, because they have different door systems, and would cause an interferance!

it's like you can only couple MML, CT and FScR 170s to 156s, as they had a wiring mod fitted around the time introduced, as they have an extra door proving loop

IIRC the exHT can be joined to a 158, along with the other FSR ones. Nit sure FSR have run a 170/156 in combo

think they could all be coupled to 158s anyway? because 158s/159s are rather different to earlier 14X/15X trains?

I assume FSR only couple 156 to 170 on depot then, given the only shared routes are Bathgate and Alloa / Stirling.

To get back on topic, it seems Northern definitely are getting three 180's for now, to be used on Manchester Victoria-Blackpool services, which should free up a few units (ie. 150/156) to strengthen some Manchester to Huddersfield and Leeds trains.

It occured to me, a 175 was apparently sent towards Huddersfield and Leeds on a test run once and it failed the clearance test (I think it was because of the width, meaning platform edges would have had to be shaved). Anyone know if 180's are the same width as 175's - or would it not be a problem?

They have the same bodies don't they?

No sorry you're wrong. Asked the guard this afternoon as I returned from Watford Junction. He wished they would hurry up the introduction of the Desiros though - makes his job nicer, as the seats in the cab are comfier apparently.

There seems to be a contradiction of reports about this. On another forum a few from Northern who work at Victoria have said nothing about 180's going east of Manchester. The vast majority have said they're to be used on Manchester-Blackpool, nothing else - I'd take the rumours about them working to Huddersfield as a bigger pinch of salt.

If Northern are only getting three 180's then that won't be enough to cover even half of the Blackpool diagrams, if they're going to work to Huddersfield as well.

I myself am a driver at Victoria, and I have been informed from higher than me that they are indeed running express to Huddersfield at peak times. Also been told that 3 units are coming and possibly a chance of 3 more next year, but the latter is not guaranteed as yet.

Cheers - heard they're only for short term. Do you know if they're staying for a year or two years (or more)?

I've seen it being done! There is a panel above the buttons which opens up where he can dispatch the train from. Not all the way through the train though, only in certain coaches.

Northern are getting 158s back from (I think) Scotrail.

The 180s are supposed to be replacing Hull Trains 222s, which are going to the EMT fleet pool. Virgin are also supposed to get some for Euston-Birmingham NS services. OAOs are also looking at them. I think Angel Trains/HSBC Rail may realise that it was a bad idea allocating them to Northern when they see the vandalism/condition of the trains on return.

Believe me, after a year of them, you won't want them... Everyone thinks that its great, but unless you have actually experienced their problems, you have no idea!

definative answer on this 321401-429 doors can only be opened from either cab, 321431-438 have door controls in either cab and also in the second coach in the direction of travel(platform side) , so you are both right and wrong.:-?

class 350's do not have a guards office, doors can be opened from anywhere apart from the leading cab, and yes there is a very comfy chair in the cab8)

350s do have the office, although it is always unused. Its by first class... The doors can be opened in there, but as they don't use it, either cab controls or anywhere along the carriages. Inside the office is a table and chair, and a currently redundant control panel...

901-903 only had them fitted at refurb.

Nothing mentioned at all about anything being long or short term. I only know that 180's are coming ( traction user guides have arrived at Vic), it is only Manchester Victoria drivers who are to have traction training on them. Three are coming soon, once modifications are done on them so guards can open and close the doors, and that there is a possibility that three more are coming early next year. If I find out more I will post any info.

The 3 more possibles are likely the 3 currently with FGW which IIRC FGW will be giving up once they receive an extra HST (an exRio one IIRC) from NXEC. This HST is covering for the set in refurb and the move will occur once the NXEC HST refurb programme is complete. The HST then goes through the FGW refurb programme and will join the FGW fleet, thus releasing the 3xcl180.

as i personally know there are no door controls in the 350 compartment at all it is fitted out to fit in catering trolleys full stop., the stated 321's do have extra door controls, these are both the trains i worked on for under three years.

would be good if the 180s would free up some 158s for EMT (or at least give them the centre cars from exTPE units again, and maybe some 142s for Lincoln-Leicester

I have always wondered why FGW and passengers wanted rid of the 180s; I could have seen them find a good home running Cardiff-Portsmouth :?
