180104 has been stabled there for a good few months now but that wouldn't have been the one you'd seen as it's on 1 road blocks and you can't see it in the carriage shed.
It would have been one of the HT units there on maintenance

I noticed it when I passed OOC on Friday!

Was it definately 104? 104 has not moved from the blocks on 1 road for months and i'm pretty certain you can't see that from the mainline or the road (unless you've got high powered binoculars)

180110 was there on Friday for maintenance.

There isn't any major fault with it, it'll take a little bit of work to get fit for service again but nothing too bad. I don't know exactly when it was last in service but it went to OOC with the intention of being used by HT but that didn't happen and it is just sitting there now because nobody wants it.

As far as I'm aware, 104 hasn't worked in service since it went off lease from FGW. It is now the only set I require!!

104 and 112 are known to OOC and those well acquainted with the damn things as being the two lame ducks or rotten eggs. Both are two of the most tempremental trains on the damn planet.

[obligatory comment]SHOVE 'EM ON LIVERPOOL - NORWICH!![/obligatory comment].

It is frustrating that there are DMUs both out of service and operating on Electric lines (which could be run by stored EMUs) whilst the majority of the DMUs up north struggle for capacity.

It is.

Be it Birmingham - Glasgow, the Lymington branch, certain Open Access services, underused electric lines like Hazel Grove... there are a lot of DMUs doing the "wrong" type of routes, when people are crying out for DMUs elsewhere :(

Stored EMUs? :o

Only ones I can think of is the small fleet of 508s which to be honest have hardly any anywhere to go. SWT have very little use for them, Southern/SouthEastern don't need them, Merseyrail don't want to pay for them; So where do they go???

not really that small either with examples from London Overground as well as SouthEastern.

I believe some are in a very poor state having said that so were some 442s and they were returned to service.

As an aside that Hull Trains 222 involved in that serious depot accident some years ago- has it returned to service for EMT?

a class 153 would be the best solution for the lymington line and cascade the 158 north? Surely Sailsbury or Bournemouth could look after the unit in addition to 158/9s?

A little electrification to Sailsbury from Southampton and to Chandlers Ford and Romsey would relieve further 158s

Surely a 508 would be best for the Lymington line? Hell, they could even have two (as they previously did) exclusively for the line - worth it to free up a much needed 158.

Of course its suitible

But its not viable to type train, paint, refurbish, test etc etc etc

No point for just such a small fleet of trains...

In the same way LM have 7 321s? Will have just 7 150s? Have 2 139s? NT have 4 321s? Scotrail have 4 322s? Non-standard yes but not impossible.

They could really do it if they wanted to, its just a bit difficult to justify cost:benefit and then of course interoperability issues. But hey, 1 158 extra makes one train on the EMT corridor 4 car, I'm all for it.

I'm all for it but i'm saying its not going to happen for the reasons stated above.

London Midland have signed 321s and 150s ever since their franchise began its not like they have took them in from elsewhere...

139s were specifically built for a purpose (sadly)

Northern shouldn't have the 321s now but that was down to WYPTE not ordering enough 333s

Scotrail wanted the 322s to boost their rolling stock at the time as they never had enough and was infact even using ex Virgin MK3s with Class 90s at the time if i'm correct

You are more likely to one day see a 456 on the Lymington line than a 508, they are old and I doubt are by wanted SWT.

I'm sure they'd be able to get them cheap as chips off the ROSCO - they're not earning them anything as it stands so they'd surely go for anything on them.

Up to recently, they owned, adapted and maintained a fleet of 2 4CIG units just for this line.

Aren't the 460s coming off lease shortly? Plus (without GWML electrification going ahead) there will be dozens of 319s spare once Thameslink gets its new stock (three years time?), so plenty spare EMUs in a few years time. Yet there are almost no spare DMUs anywhere, apart from one dud 180

WillPS stated "Stored EMUs"; the 460s are for now still in use and the 319s are going to be on Thameslink for a good few years!

Plus once again; where the 460s are going to go only remains to be seen as they're fairly useless once they are off the Gatwick Express...

Pity as they are decent trains which have eventually built up decent reliability with Southern...

I really hope we don't end up in the situation where we have 64x 460 carriages sitting idle (whilst other routes are busy), but sadly I wouldn't be surprised...

Last I heard the 460s were being broken up into smaller formations with spare vehicles being put into 458s to provide extra capacity on those trains. Apparently they are mechanically very similar.

The same with different front ends I've heard. Another chapter in the very rocky story of the Junipers!

I've heard that too (in lieu of some of the "new" carriages SWT were to get), never sure who to believe these days!

Maybe the two car "spares" could be used on routes like Lymington?

Yeah, another stupidly small class which has turned into a headache, like the 180s, yet we keep building small classes...

But if they did that then that would free up a useful unit for use elsewhere...

Every little helps - if it frees one 158 to turn a couple of Liverpool - Nottingham services from two cars to three (or a couple of Cardiff - Portsmouth services from three cars to four) then its worth it

Everyone wants to be Stanier & Gresley

I think you've summed up one of the great failures of privatisation in one sentence there! Perfectly apt
