^tbf I get a lot of trains in Cornwall and they’re rarely packed except for rush hour trains in the day you do see entire empty carriages, even now at 3.30PM this train (class158) has about three ppl max and it’s struggling or slow driver at least can open windows on these though
The aircon must have failed and the guard unlocked the windows if you can open them!

If you're referring to the 1450 from Penzance which is the regular PM 158 working that's usually full of school kids in West Cornwall so I really don't understand why there are only three people on the whole train today. Very odd indeed.

Or is it the 15.15 ex Penzance which is a 150 (where the windows do open as a matter of course)?

But that is true near London, trains can be fairly empty, apart from when they are not. You can’t plan a Cornwall service on the least populated service.

From what I gather, there are still no Penzance drivers trained son them.
It's most likely because 175010 came down from Ely in a bit of a state so needs a bit of polishing to have Penzance drivers train on it. Then again, you could send one of the Laira units down to get that started.

I believe Penzance Guards are being trained currently on the workings from Plymouth, along with crews from Plymouth and Exeter.

Reportedly the rear unit was locked out of use in both directions for some reason.

TUDI is a system on the 175 which can be isolated in the rear cab of the leading unit. It isolates the doors in the rear unit. It’s not quite SDO. Even if 5 of 6 coaches were accommodated for instance, and TUDI had been isolated, only the front three coaches would arm when releasing doors.

Apologies for this, the forum didn’t load other posts when I tapped on the notification. :?::lol:

I can’t currently find the post explaining it but it will be down to the TUDI and staff not yet trained to use it in service. But it’ll be the front 2 in use / open to Penzance with the rear 2 locked out, switching at Penzance to the front 2 in use with the rear 2 locked out.

So they've run successfully in multiple in passengers service for over 20 years. Yet GWR can't manage to train their staff to use what appears to be quite a fundamental system for when they at last start working in multiple on GWR.

It sounds exactly the same system that the 458/0s had, and which was successfully used from the outset.

26 extra trains for the South West. About four of them are in service, and, although they can operate in multiple, they do so with one unit locked out of use. Meanwhile other trains are short-formed due to a shortage of units. Unless something major is done soon, the summer season is going to be a fiasco.

So how does it get swapped over at Penzance if the staff aren’t trained on it yet?

Exactly! It sounds rather similar to the 5-car Aventras on SWR which it also seems staff need extra training on.

The issue was that some of the crews were only able to do their training with a single unit (some of the earlier ones)

I was wondering the same thing, unless someone at terminal stations are jumping on and switching it on and off as back unit becomes front etc, then clearly somebody on the train knows how to work the TUDI switch.

The press release when 175 were coming said
Able to be connected in four, five and six-car formations, the trains will operate predominantly on the line between Exeter St Davids and Penzance, as well as to Barnstaple and Okehampton.
It suggests the trains were intended to regularly operate as double units, and logically the whole train would then be available to passengers. So the idea of locking rear unit out on a 4coach train is clearly a bodge for railways convenience (rather than passengers comfort and ease)

It'll all dwindle down to who has the training for it. In the past few weeks double units have been common and basically daily on the training runs, so more recent passings will be trained to do it. In the early phases of training a pair of 175s were limited and rarely went out, so earlier trainees will likely still need to be trained with the TUDI system. I'm sure sooner or later it'll happen. Considering that from this coming week, 2C26/2P21 is booked 4-car on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, we could see a full set in use without having a unit locked out as soon as next week. Someone will have to be down there to confirm that, though.

I totally understand that guards need to be trained on all aspects of the unit that they are responsible for and operating but the TUDI - Trailing Unit Door Isolation - system on a 175 is pretty simple and easy to understand when units are operated in multiple and that the attached rear units, however many other units that there maybe, are not available to passengers.
By operating the TUDI switch in the rear cab of the leading unit this disables the door arming/enable signals being transferred via the coupler electrical head to the remainder of the units coupled and this can easily be confirmed by the guard.
The TUDI switch on the isolation panel, 2nd mans side, is only 1 of 2 switches that do not require a drivers key and reset key to fully operate/reinstate. The other being the TPWS temporary isolation switch which is also protected by a plastic seal.

Very conviently as I'm looking at Laira, the allocations are in.
5C00 - 175009 and 175002, 175002 works the new diagram starting 2C00 then 2E06.
2C26/2P21 has been given to 175006.

Very nice experience as a passenger extremely comfortable seats loads of leg room much brighter inside this is a massive upgrade to the hitachi horrible things
What station is this? Also, does anyone in here know what the small text on the "X" sign in the windscreen says? It looks a bit more complex than "non-multi".

Positive to see that everything is currently running smoothly, 175006 is now in revenue earning service for the first time today too, hopefully it picks up the pace!

Not everything is running smoothly! 175009 on 5Z23 / 5Z24 has had engine problems at Par this afternoon.

They do seem to have issues with the doors on these ex TFW trains. Sometimes they won’t open at all or for ages then I noticed that staff had to open them via a switch by the doors this has made some trains very late massive delays at every stop because of this

Guards who are passed out on 175s HAVE been TUDI trained - it's not added to their licence if they haven't been assessed on it.
The TUDI has NOT been passed to be used in passenger service with passengers in the isolated unit, therefore the blanket method of operation at the moment is to have the trailing unit out of use.
As part of the last pay deal it was condition that the RMT had to co-operate with the introduction of the 175s.
Something else is holding up the introduction of the TUDI use with passengers in the isolated unit.

Or is it as simple as that at this time of year 2 coaches are basically enough - but units in multiple are required for staff familiarisation etc.

There's been a lot of complaints about overcrowding where single 150s have replaced HSTs, so no.

For example, when the 0745 from Penzance went from HST to 150 there were complaints of standing room only from Penzance. It's now a two-car 175 and probably no better.

Any chance of a reply, @Cheers Drive? :) (or anyone else who knows what station is in the photos)
