The better Devon city
Of the 20 GWR 150s, 4 are away from Devon/Cornwall which has been standard for all of this summer.

150202 St Philips Marsh
150261 St Philips Marsh
150263 Wolverton
150265 Wolverton

Of the remaining 16, 15 have seen passenger use today with only 150266 inactive. 150233 looks to have failed at Falmouth and hence the cancellations. 150247 + 150248 are covering 2E04 etc which long term should be a 175 but recently has been covered by an IET, but not today for some reason.
150266 was in the shed at Exeter TMD on track 3 next to 175004 when I passed yesterday.

10:27 Exeter-Penzance Is 2X 150, I'm surprised they don't detach the rear one at Truro
They ran on the rear of the 06:55 Exeter to Penzance earlier, a 7 car formation between Exeter St Davids and Plymouth! Rear 4 locked out. It could be that they are multi only. @Jrocks will know.

All to do with the 175 reduction plan and the fact we had spare units in Exeter.

Due to engineering works affecting HSS services, we do not have a 'spare' IET to cover one of the 175 diagrams, hence we needed to send a 150 down to Plymouth to start the diagram which runs with 2E04 and other services.

Neither 150 is Multi-only so i cant speak as to why it wasnt split, however one of the reasons may be because it forms the school train out of Devonport in the evening, which if its a 2 car will leave hundreds of school children behind on the platforms, which as we can all agree is far from ideal!

GWR supposed to restore the service on 12th December how many 175s in commission will they need to deliver that?
Probably six to restore the service in the southwest. But that was not the intention for the 175 fleet. The 175s were not meant to increase services, except Newquay, but to increase capacity. For that they would have needed 19 175s to increase capacity in the South west and Bristol by moving stock, 158s, around and not need so many turbos.

3 car trains for Okehampton, a 5 car for Barnstaple. Falmouth 3 car if it's possible at Penryn 71 metre platforms.

Presumably the TfW 158s that are definitely maybe moving to GWR are part of the capacity plan.

There are about 950 vehicles in GWR fleet (plus sleeper fleet)
The 175s are adding 68 vehicles
The 158s add about 40 vehicles (depending on exact number moving)

So roughly 11% uplift in vehicles

However many of GWR local services in South West and Bristol suburban are running at 115-140% of few years ago, (and some are currently suppressed due to crowding) so questionable if these extra units are more a half-hearted sticking plaster, than a capacity solution plan

002 out on it's usual passenger run. 011+114 seems to be in the dock platform at Plymouth. Shocking services elsewhere. Cancellations at Barnstaple, Newquay, and Falmouth.

003 was reliable, others haven't been too bad and of course there is 103 and 110 doomed to rot at Laira, perhaps the go faster paint is peeling.

There was some sort of incident in Cornwall early this morning. London services were heavily delayed or part-cancelled as well.

I wouldn't say shocking personally, these issues cannot be attributed to the 175s either so its completly inaccurate to try and portray these as the fault of the 175s.

Barnstaple had a train fault on the first service, had to return to Exeter as not to ruin the branch line for the day. The 158 was subsequently fixed and came back out to play later in the day.

Cornish branches are down to this incident in cornwall last night, and the railway had no control over what happened last night so again would be disingenuous to blame the railway for these issues!

I am sure the passengers will agree with you about a two hour gap at Newquay and Barnstaple as they pass Laira and wonder what all those trains are doing there.

The existing trains have such a workload with no respite.

There was a car that collided with some level crossing equipment late last night that then ended up on the track and was hit by a passing IET. No injuries but road closed and IET needs repairs.

The existing trains do have a massive workload, you are not wrong there. In this country we do like to 'sweat the assets' as they say!

Even if the 175s were running just fine, the Newquay branch cancellation this morning was not a 175 related issue anyway, the 175 could have been running just fine but due to the aforementioned incident in cornwall it still would not have run.

I do think the public understand that the trains have to be in a fit state to run. Yes, people are fed up of reduced timetables and short trains, but the question really is would you rather a *pretty* reliable service with the current stock or potentially have a 175 that isnt quite ready for service sit down on a branch line and cancel the service for the whole day?

I’ve just passed Ely on my way home and it hasn’t moved yet!
Looking on RTT, there are no diagrams in the schedule yet that suggest it's leaving the site anytime soon. A light loco turned up from Derby yesterday, which is probably the one pictured. So either 175104 is just being shunted into a different siding, or it's being prepped for transport by road.

The way I see it currently, it's a short term pain for the service (loss of some services) for long term gain. Once the units are fit for service and the team at Laira are happy with them and confident they're not just going to take a nap on the mainline or a branch line, we'll see the benefits. 002, 003, 006 and 114 have all shown how well the units can work, they've all been really well reliable on the current 1 diagram. I'm hoping they'll take on one of the other diagrams to release a 150 but I'm not in control here and I'm sure the team in control have a lot more experience and knowledge of what's right than me ;)
