I actually think simply painting the red doors and red swoosh at the cab ends into GWR dark green (and whacking a GWR logo on) would look fairly smart, rather than fully vinyling into the full livery.
Agreed, I would like to see them leave the white bits white and paint the red bits into GWR dark green. However, there's also the (slightly blueish?) dark grey window band to consider - I think that might clash with the green and might be harder to redo in GWR dark green without a full repaint.

Surely not as much as the First Group blue around the EMR 180s did

The plan if GWR gets the 175s is to use them in the west on routes such as Plymouth / Penzance replacing HSTs / 158s and some 802s, Okehampton replacing 150s allowing for these to work Newquay - Falmouth services and Barnstaple replacing 158s.

The 158s will then all be centred on Portsmouth to Cardiff.
It would have been nicer for the 175s if allocated to Great Western Railway to work such services to Cardiff, given their history there.

Hopefully if they do Cardiff to Penzance they won't just be 2 or 3 car sets. I use the service regularly, including twice today, and they are well loaded 5 car 800s currently.
Quite agree, I had the pleasure of standing on a packed three car Turbo between Cardiff and Bristol this morning. Until the additional TfW Cardiff - Bristol services are added (if they ever materialise), all services between Cardiff and Bristol need to be five cars as a minimum.

You'd use 175s to replace 150s on Paignton-Exmouth before you'd put them on Okehampton.

Nope, that's literally the most ridiculous suggestion yet. Paignton to Exmouth is the absolute last place you want low density stock. Turbo's and 150's are perfect. The 175's are much better suited to Okehampton and Barnstaple as most traffic is end to end where end doors will cause least delays.

There must be delays at Exeter Central when a terminator 158 for Exmouth siding arrives because of the door arrangement.

When the service first started they terminated at St James for one timetable then cut back to Central for safety reasons.

Not particularly, there is plenty of time in the timetables for securing the unit and the passengers are pretty much up and ready to get off.

No it's all built into the timetable, there's generally almost ten minutes headway before the Exmouth arrives after a terminating Barney.

We'll see, if 175s ever actually arrive on GWR's territory. Most of Exmouth-Paignton passengers board and alight at the ends and in Exeter. GWR will want to put the attractive new trains where people will see them. Eleven extra seats is really here nor there.

Over 50% of passengers do travel to/from Exeter, though there are considerable numbers joining/leaving at many other stations. Occasional use off 175s may happen, like 158s now, but Okehampton/ Barnstaple will be the planned diagrams.

They really don't, I work the line daily, Exmouth, Digby, Exeter Central/St Davids/St Thomas, Dawlish Warren (summer), and every station west to Paignton have significant flows to and from, everything from School and College kids to commuters and Tourists, whenever a 158 drops on there it's a nightmare.

It's more than 11 seats when you have a short formed 2 car 150 instead of the booked 4 car or 3 car turbo

If 175s end up at Exeter then they WILL end up on Paignton-Exmouth just as the odd 158 does. If based at Laira then there is less chance.

Well, only if they get route cleared for it. I’d be surprised if they didn’t route clear them but you never know.

That’s never been disputed what has been mentioned is not planning them to be allocated to the route in the base plan.

Wouldn't make any difference where they are allocated as some 175s would stable at Exeter overnight anyway (same for SPM and Long Rock).

Not sure if this would have any bearing as they are similar but Did the 180s ever run to Paignton or Penzance or were they cleared for those routes? I’m sure they serviced to Plymouth but not Penzance or Paignton.

I'm pretty sure they haven't gone any further than Plymouth

I think when they ran Exeter semi-fasts (circa 2003-04) some runs extended to Paignton? I could well be mistaken though.

As far as I’m aware they didnt then, only as far as Exeter then the last one ECS to Laira I believe. The 0600 PLY-PAD was a 180.

I’m seeing on social media that two 175’s are to go to Laira soon for GWR to begin training ? Any truth in it ?
