Interestingly enough, even genius lists them as being coupled for that particular trip but that sometimes happens when the systems don't get updated. One thing that can be guaranteed though is that they did not go to Canton together, it's just not possible.

The two classes are incompatible, they cannot and do not operate together either in service or on empty stock workings. In this case as with all other cases where realtimetrains shows such allocations, this is the result of the originally allocated unit being swapped for something else and the original allocation not being removed from the system when the new one is added. Only one of those units will actually work that service. Another example of incompatible classess being shown by realtimetrains can often be found on LNER, where it's not unheard for for realtimetrains to show an 800/801 coupled to a 91+Mark 4 set - as with the TFW example only one of the two will actually turn up for the working.

There is a procedure to allow one class to rescue the other with an emergency coupling adaptor, but this can only used in emergency situations as it is a time consuming procedure, and the train is limited to 5mph max under such working.

If you tried all you'd get is a rather expensive sounding bang and probably two broken couplers.

170s are occasionally coupled to 153s at Cardiff for trips to Canton which might be the source of confusion here, but never 175s.

Somebody did try to couple a 175 to a 150 at Blackpool. Quite serious damage to both units ! Their control systems are also totaly incompatable. For starters 15x are 24v control, wheras 175 are 110v control. The only other units 175 can couple to are 180.

All sorts shows up if it’s inputted incorrectly such as this 769 with a Mk4 set.

Pretty sure this working into Canton is 2 separate arriving services that attach at Cardiff and go to Canton together. Looks like one of them was subbed by a 175 that day so would go to Canton separately.
