I'm a little disappointed to see that they've gone with a similar type of headlight fitting to the one they used on the Class 171's and newer Class 170's rather then the design shown in the artist's impression.

Nice to see the pic though, looking forward to seeing the 172/2&3's with the end gangways! I assume it'll keep the Turbostar look rather then taking on the appearance of a Class 375?

I agree 'the sniper'. To be honest the picture is a little bit blurry so I would like a better picture to confirm this because it doesn't really favour a turbostar. It may be photoshopped but who knows.

...which reminds me that I feel they'll regret the lack of corridor connections at some stage in the future...

By the looks of it, i think theyve gained the lights from the 378 Fleet rather than the original 170/171 Fleet & Artists impressions...

As for the door size - i think its just the distance of the picture that makes the doors look small - they look normall size to me...

Though itll be interesting to see what will be of the Interior - Will LOROL Spec mean the same dire interior as in the 378s? or will it be more of a Mainline style 2+3 interior? And will it have toilets as per the 150s?

Intersting times anyway...and Finnaly, The first sight of the 172! only after how many years???

Wouldn't surprise me if the LO ones did have the 378 headlights - I'm guessing LO will want them to be as similar to the 378s as possible, in the same way TPE did when they got their 170s!

Also, I remember when they were first announced reading that some of them (was it the LM ones?) will be getting the corridor connectors!

The majority will! :)

Chiltern Railways 4 units and LO's 8 will not have end gangways while London Midland's 27 units will have the end gangways.

I have to agree with tbtc, I'm sure the LO units lack of end gangways will end up being a problem in the future, in some way or another.

Looks odd with a very yellow cab which goes beyond the very front.

Im really eager to see the Chiltern Railways Class 172 and what they will look like, I reckon that they will have the Class 168/2 style lighting andmore of a 'turbostar' look.

Does anyone know if the 172s for chiltern will be used on the London-Aylesbury line?

It seems a bit silly ordering 75mph max speed stock for a 100mph line, that's all.

They are not intended for regular use to Aylesbury.

Speed wise, bear in mind that the 165's are 75mph and will remain in use.

Aren't the Chiltern 172's going to be 100mph regeared?

No the Chiltern variants will be 75mph limited, for the services they intended to run they will rarely get the chance to do 100mph.

Wikipedia says that they will not have tripcocks fitted, so they will not be allowed to run to Aylesbury. It's uncited however so make your own minds up.

Chiltern will run them on Gerrards X stoppers, and occasionally making a journey up to High Wycombe, you shouldnt see them anywhere else.

Presuming they will be fuelled, watered and based at Wembley (Chiltern), I wonder if they will head up to Aylesbury for heavier maintenance (can Wembley do much above an a exam?) or perhaps across to Willesden where the Gospel Oak ones will presumably be based?

well if that were to be the case they would not be allowed to travel on the shared met lines, there would be no reason for them not to go to aylesbury, just because of tripcocks, gota love wiki.

also im sure i said before on a simular thread about 172's ive seem a computer mock up of the lm version with gangways fitted and they look alot like the new 380's i.e sqare shaped headlights.

Are you being sarcastic?

No, sorry if it came out like that, but why order four? Well I suppose it's a bit like how virgin ordered a few new 390s, but that makes more sense because they are ordering additonal coaches

Though Chiltern have tagged onto LO/LM's order so it wouldn't be as expensive as ordering 4 on their own

Why would Chiltern order only four 172s?

May be it's all they will need or all they can afford, I presume they are for the stopping services out of Marylebone as they have a good accelleration they will be used so as not to delay the longer distance non stopping trains behind, so planner is probably right with the GX and odd Wycombe, if they need to go to Aylesbury they can always go via P, Risborough and not need trip cocks.

LO and Chiltern are owned by DB so maybe one order
