170s were built 1998-2005 and 172s were built 2010-2011 :)

They're effectively different generations of trains - 170 is a development of 165/166 which have their roots in the 80s. 172 is a new product for the 2000s.

Exactly 170 and 172 cant be compared, they may look similar but technical wise they could be a massive improvement compared to 153s which need to go to the scrap heap anyway

That seems to be a change relating to the introduction of the electric services of the Chase Line. The 1759 departure to Great Malvern currently is formed from an inbound working from Rugeley. In the new timetable the Rugeley-New St. service is extended to International using an EMU. This leaves the requirement to source a DMU for the 1759 service from Tyseley -- the only logical explanation I can think of regarding why it runs to International initially is that there isn't an available path through Bordesley/Grand Jct to arrive just before forming the Worcester-bound service, so to avoid having a unit hogging platform space at New St they send it out to International to use some time.

Just my thoughts, the real reason could be very different.

I would have returned it in service vice ECS though as it means not having to check the train for being clear of passengers before running ECS back to New Street.

I recently travelled on a 153 on the back of a 172/3. I presume therefore that the driver would have controlled his acceleration to allow for this.
Have they made any adjustments to allow the doors to open between the two train types? I seem to remember back on a 172 introduction thread, people were saying they couldn't have the gangway doors open into each other.

One of the new 172s has gone into the far siding at Tyseley today. Suspiciously a place 150s frequently use to stand... Anyone going to try and catch it? I believe the ex-150 diagram starts with the 1050 from New Street. (Originally the first journey came from Worcester in the peak, went to Tyseley for a bit and came back, though I believe towards the end of the 150s it started only doing one way or the other.)

Well one of the 150s (150107) has moved up north to Newton Heath... So i'd guess that a 172/0 has taken its place in the depot. Just a guess though.
If I recall someone reported that all 3 150s moved as a set together last week.

If on the ex 150 diagram should be operating the 14:50 departure as well from New Street.

The class 172/0s being transferred from LO or going to be refurbished with toilets and then are going to work these services (from WMT website):
  • Two of these will be used between Leamington Spa and Nuneaton, operating as a two carriage service in each direction.
  • One of the 172/0 units will start operating between Birmingham New Street and Hereford to replace a 33 year old Class 150 unit which is being cascaded to Northern.
  • The remaining units will be used on the Snow Hill lines and to maintain capacity while the operator’s 27 existing Class 172 units undergo a modification programme.
There is also this photo of two 172s (front unit is 172003) coupled together at Kenilworth although I believe they aren't going to be coupled in service. I wouldn't be surprised when there is an event on like a game at the Coventry Arena they couple two 172s (Kenilworth can support 4 cars don't know about the stations between Nuneaton and Coventry) or use the ones with end gangways. Also I wonder what will happen once the existing 172s will finish modification as the /0s appear to just be covering them, I wonder if they will couple them together or give Nuneaton to Leamington the /2s or /3s and use the /0s on another line as the Nuneaton to Leamington service stops at Coventry Arena. However this service will be 2tph once another platform is built at Coventry but they will still have a 172/0 left.

Any idea on the unit on the 1050 Birmingham New Street - Hereford today? Is it 172003 again or something else having its first trip?

On the subject of 172003 I saw some photos on Twitter of the interior and it looks very smart with its new WMR mainly grey moquette and carpet. New moquette didn't stretch to the drivers seat though, which is still Overground Orange.

Looking forward to these units on our new Nuneaton - Leamington service.

Any link to where these pictures could be found?
