Hi all,

I noticed this allocation on RTT today:

Are we going to see more of this? I assumed Norwich-Liverpool was strictly 158 operated, apart from the occasional 156

How Can a 175 operate the service? Must be a mistake somehow...
EMR do not have any 168s either.

It’s frequently raised on here that those notes are to show what it’s timed as. Many units can keep to those timings (in this case a 175).

For example, Chiltern have 168 and 165’s, the 168’s having the higher top speed. So if the diagram is timed for a 165, it can be operated by a 165 or a 168, just the timings won’t make use of the 168’s speed.

Also, 170’s made regular appearances on this route when Central Trains ran it. So they’re cleared. If it’s a choice of that or a 156, I know which I’d rather!

It’s a quite regular occurrence.

Given the current state of TPE's spasmodic service over the Sheffield - Manchester section the ability of EMR to fill all their hourly paths is a godsend. It should be 4 car but a 3 car 170 is better than 2. I gather words may have been exchanged at high levels and 170s are a practical way to improve things. It's fairly recent.

Northern can find stock to send out longer than 2 car stopping trains but often can't because the other TOCs have been granted paths for longer trains into the required Sheffield platforms. TPE are in a very difficult position at present. Their mostly 6 car hourly service in early March 2020 was down to this today; https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/se...-2359?stp=WVS&show=pax-calls&order=wtt&toc=TP

How is it TPE can't manage 6 cars? I thought their issue was staff, like Avanti? They have a huge surplus of rolling stock.

As for 170s they were used in Central Trains days and were very well suited, the doors at thirds work well for high loadings and big changeovers of passengers in several places en route. But 5 or 6 car would be nearer the mark than 3 these days.

TPE loadings are well down on pre Covid so they may not need 6 on most but 0 is certainly not enough! Presumably there are big savings on 3 rather than 6 car. It's the gaps that are more the priority for travellers at present. Mornings and early afternoons are dire.

A 170 or 185 at Piccadilly 13/14 and at Oxford Road must load beter than a 158.
