Class 170 Screen

Bit of a odd question but anybody a expert on 170s what’s the purpose of that screen on some units on the left hand side of the cab

MITRAC train management system I would imagine. The 168/2s had them when new but they were removed a good few years ago.

As per above it's the MITRAC screen. On our class 170s it only shows four fault red lights - local fault, dragging brake, parking brake, transmission. The driver can't interact with it at all but there is a maintenance mode unlocked by a key switch which gives a lot more information for maintenance staff. Only some of our units are fitted with the screens and they are currently being removed and replaced with four actual LED bulbs in its place.

Interesting, I didn't know until now that any 170s had a "computer screen" Train Management System!

I was always of the understanding that none did, and that that was part of them being able to work in multiple with the Sprinter family (along with the BSI couplers and 7 power notches etc.)

We have a couple of sets (170431/432) where the screen is "active" and it shows all sorts of things like engine/gearbox status, temperatures, toilet status, formation, door status and loads more. I guess it's quite useful for maintenance staff although I'm not sure if it records any events/faults. These were the 2 sets fitted with experimental MTU engines a number of years ago and the screens have been active ever since.
