Sorry if this has been asked before but can I ask what the difference is between a class 150/1 and 150/2?

Thanks

/1 have an inward-opening hinge door for the crew just behind the cab. On a /2 this is a powered sliding door, because passengers can access this part of the train on a /2 on the way to the gangway so a manual door would be dangerous.

Interior-wise the main distinguishing feature is that the glass screens separating the seating area from the vestibule are rectangular on the /1 and triangular on the /2 and the adjacent grab rails vertical and sloping respectively. I think when first built the /2 had a greater proportion of face-to-back seating, but I'm not certain of this and so many of the layouts have since been changed that it wouldn't be a reliable feature today in any case.

Internally 150/1s have a strip of lighting down each side of the carriage. The 150/2s have a central strip.

Can passengers operate the 'cab doors' on the /2? If they are powered I can't see a reason why not?

If they are coupled, the cab doors beside the 'dead' cabs become passenger doors on the /2s. When the 150s were semi-permanently coupled as 3 cars in the West Midlands, that door was a passenger door.

/1 has one alternator under each vehicle, the /2 has two.
/1 has one jumper cable beside each semi rigid coupler; whereas the /2 uses two.
/1 has alternating emergency door release mechanisms above passenger doors; the /2 has them above every one.
/1 has no DVD for the driver, whereas the /2 does.

Some minor differences exist in the positioning of cab equipment too but I wouldn't worry about them, and some of the components under the vehicle are positioned differently.

The rear door on a single set will be available for passenger use too. It's only the door behind an active driving cab which is unavailable for use.

Another difference I can think of, /1 cab doors open outwards towards the non-passenger vestibule, /2 cab doors open inwards to block part of the cab for when the through gangway is in use. FGW's 150202 did have an outward opening door on one end which meant the gangway was not in use when in multiple because one side of the cab would have been open to passengers, the gangway could still be used by staff though.

That's interesting- on 317s which have an almost identical layout, the gangway is publically accesible when coupled but the external cab doors aren't useable by passengers.

I thought the 317s cab doors were all usuable by the public except at the cab with the door key switch in use.

They are but only have buttons inside-some passengers have figured out that you just pull them from outside but they ate only allowed in the middle cabs, not the back one-I have kicked people out from the back vestibule area in the past.

These turn into passenger doors as they have the regular open/close door controls for passengers. However there is also CDL (Central Door Locking) unit both sides of this area corresponding to the doors either side. The conductor can activate this to operate the doors with the turn of a T-key on the adjacent wall.

Internally the window surrounds are different. The /1's have the MK3 Carriage & Class 317/455 style plastic smooth window surrounds with a thick rubber strip where two surrounds meet. The /2's have the Class 321/319 style window surrounds.

150/1s have an absolutely dire interior, 150/2s are slightly better! (in the case of FGW and ATW anyway; Northern's 150/2s are minging too!)
