hi all there is a class 150 that works a chesterfield (06:30ish)- Normanton (07:30ish) to Leeds. it is always a 2 car (never a second unit). is there any reason what so ever - platform restrictions- train crew, as to why this service cannot be strengthened. any help appreciated.

0626 Chesterfield to Leeds. It cannot be booked for a 150 as it is timed for 90mph max, a 150 is 75mph max, although one might deputise for a 158 in the event of non-availability. Why should it be strengthened ? If so what with, there's scores of spare units lying spare all over the place. <(<(<(

train is more often than not a 150/2. and is rammed full (crush capacity) most days after Barnsley defiantly by Normanton, northern have stated train cannot be strengthened for operational reasons but would not clarify what they meant by this,

I'm not sure of platform lengths along this route, but it wouldn't be a train crew problem. Most probably, nothing to strengthen it with.

At Leeds it forms a service to Knottingley, that is unlikely to be a 158. The running times for a 150 between Chesterfield and Meadowhall (the only sections of the route with line speed above 75mph) is 30 seconds longer between Dronfield and Dore Station Junction, so it is plausible that this could be booked for a 150.

Of course this has been done to death on this forum, but i'll say it again, 'timed for' can and often does have no relation to what a service is booked.

Surely booked for a 158. The Timetable would not be robust and validated if timed at 90mph and booked for a 75mph unit. The normal stock for this route is a 158 unless it has "slipped through the net" re timings.

Most likely historical, possibly booked a 158 in the past. More than enough allowances to ensure a robust timetable, and that is most likely why it is still a 90mph path.

Perfectly possible to have a validated timetable with a 90mph path then book a 75mph unit to it - of course it is at Northern's own risk and any delays caused by operating like this will cost them.

This train is book and most of the time is a 150. It then as said above goes on 08/11/14:00 Leeds-Knottingley-Wakefield K-Knottingley-Leeds then 17:16 Goole and 18:49 back followed by 20:30 Leeds to Sheffield Express and 22:24 back via Moorthorpe. It used to have a 153 tagged on which at one time stayed attached till after arrival from Goole at 1958. Then it split off after arriving from the 08:00 Knottingleys then shunted into 14 for the day and shunted back for the Goole. Now the 153 comes off a Man Vic in the morning then down for the day on Holbeck before arriving and coupling for the 1716 Goole

Just to remove any doubt at all definitely booked a 150 - NH443 diagram.

Being timed for 90mph means absolutely nothing!

A few years ago I'm sure it was a 153+150

thanks to all that answered the next turn the unit works casts some light on the situation possibly - an uncoupling move at leeds not being possible could be the operational reason that northern refuse to disclose.

it is often a 150 - I have caught it several times. I think it goes onto the Knottingly cycle after that Chesterfield service and I assume it starts from Sheffield i nthe morning and finishes at Holbeck or Neville Hill in the evening
