Was looking out the bathroom window when suddenly I hear this thudding noise and a sprinter train (a 150 I think) suddenly comes grinding to a halt. I live right next to the Colne-Preston route between Colne and Nelson and so I see trains passing (quite fast) every day.
I have lived there for 20 years. And to see a breakdown is a rare thing. I remember about a year ago a 142 stopped right outside my house but then a few minutes later it set off again.
It has been stuck there for about the last 20 minutes I would say and I have heard voices so I don’t know quite what is going on. I heard it trying to rev up once but then it failed. Possibly a breakdown - or maybe worse - an obstruction? Or maybe even a person?? . Perish the thought..
I have just been outside to have a look but I’ve not noticed anything wrong..
Anyway, anyone travelling towards Preston tonight coming from Colne direction expect significant delays.
Edit: I heard the brakes release and the train has slowly set off into the distance now. Oh well, alls well ends well. Must be just dodgy engine or summat.
Ah, just checked on national rail enquiries website and apparently the problem was vandalism of railway equipment. There are some metal gates that give access onto the track a few houses down so maybe that has something to do with it.
I also was up at about 2 in the morning the other week and heard and saw people and flashing lights so I think there has been some engineering work done where the train stopped so maybe that is responsible.
Update @ 21:49 To my amazement I’ve just seen (what I presume is the same train) very slowly roll back towards Colne and on Sundays the trains are only one every two hours! This gets weirder by the minute.....
I can also hear some suspicious noises like gates slamming next to the railway and after seeing reports of vandalism on the national rail enquiries website it is VERY suspicious indeed....
Update @ 21:54 Train has just returned from Colne slowly heading towards Nelson. Just checked on the National Rail website and that same train that stopped outside my house about an hour ago is now somewhere between Pleasington and Bamber Bridge so this must be a different train.
I think the problem was probably not due to a breakdown then more like a vandalised part of the track so the trains are probably going extra slow just to be safe...
I can only guess but I think what must’ve happened was some idiot must’ve dumped something onto the track (perhaps either by somehow getting through the gates or by throwing something from across the path on the other side (which goes very close to the track) or perhaps someone dropping something onto the track from the viaduct about 100 metres before my house (there are a few viaducts between Colne and Nelson so I think vandalism is quite common on that stretch of the line).
Anyway, I am still confused because trains are only once every two hours on Sundays on this line, especially at this hour so to get two trains within the hour even with one of them being 30 minutes late on a quiet Sunday evening is a mystery...
