I think you would be very unlucky to travel on one over the S & C. On a stopper between Manchester and Sheffield a class 142 would be highly likely. Leeds to Lancaster might also throw up a class 142.

With Northern's random unit generator anything is possible, used to be common before the arrival of the 158's on the S&C, probably unlikely now although Im not sure the dog boxes are that much better.If a 153/155 is described as being built by a bus company on a bad day they must have been having a very bad day!

Manchester Airport to Southport via Bolton is usually a double 142.

142s fairly common on MCV-HUD, and often turn up on the LDS-MCV via Dewsbury/Brighouse. Of the 3 units each day on the Penistone line, there's usually at least one 2-car pacer, but it's as likely to be a 144 as a 142.

I think Northern try to avoid them on Whitby runs, particularly on weekends and over the summer- but if that's all there is available, it'll be one.

As well as Northern Rail, Arriva Trains Wales have a fleet of pacers (142s and 143s). The 142s are almost always on the Cardiff Valley Lines and Cardiff Local services. Sometimes they venture further away from Cardiff on the Cardiff-Swansea stopping services, Cardiff-Cheltenham Spa and Swansea-Pembroke Dock services.

They never work in Mid or North Wales as ATW drivers and/or crews are not trained for them up there I dont think.

Neither can they move them from their Depot at Cardiff up north due route availability issues. Booked daily on Maesteg to Cheltenham.

The 12:13 Liverpool Lime St to Manchester Airport was a 2 car 142 today. Absolutely rammed full out of Lime St and turning people away as early as 1st stop Wavertree Tech Park! Again, any route they can creep up on (this service is normally 156 operated).

Thanks for all your input everyone, the 142's certainly are 'marmite' units. they are a bit of a novelty for me from the smoke, but i can imagine they're not everyones cup of tea. i detest the DLR units i travel on everyday. I am planning a trip to Manchester for a day bashing the pacers. cheers

Liverpool Lime St. --- 142s work about one third to half of the all stations services to Wigan, Manchester Oxford Rd., Manchester Vic/Stalybridge, Warrington Bank Quay. May also appear on Preston /Blackpool & Man. Airport services.

Manchester Piccadilly --- 142s work majority of local services to Marple, New Mills & Sheffield, although one or two 150 or 156 may also appear.

Manchester Victoria --- apart from the Calder Valley & Clitheroe lines, a high proportion of services tend to be 142s.
On the Calder Valley, Leeds via Brighouse services often a 142 or 144, but services via Bradford are mainly (but not exclusively) 150, 158 or 155.


Colne - Blackpool South is often 142.

There are a few afternoon turns on the XX:48 off Vic that for some reason always have a 142 on so if you like high speed 142s hang around after about 14:00 ish and you'll not have too wait long!

142s are cleared to Clitheroe now and turn up fairly often. Also I believe 144s have appeared on the Hull - Scarborough jobs in the past or at least as far as Bridlington

The 17:00, 18:00 and 19:00 youll find 5 cars of pacer for your commute

Finally in summer Northern send a 142 up to Barrow and it is based there all week. I caught it from Lancaster last year to Barrow, great views out of the bay, what more could you want?



If you want 142s evening peak at Vic is where its at. From about 16:30 onwards you can sometimes have every single platform full of pacers!

For Pacers reaching their maximum speed there's services throughout the day between Manchester and Chester via Altrincham where they reach 75mph between Manchester and Stockport and then again between Stockport and Altrincham.

Well Piccadilly has multiple Pacers on the same platform. One ECS movement sees 4 arrive all at once to the same platform for Hazel Grove/Chester services (while Chester via Altrincham doesn't have any peak time extras from Piccadilly the 4 car 150 that operates the 15:04 Chester-Manchester goes on to the Buxton line afterwards) and then there's plenty of Pacers on the services to/from Marple direction.

With regards to the valley lines, the lines which seem have most pacers being used (from my casual observations) are Treherbert - Cardiff Central, and Bargoed - Penarth, but they pretty much show up on all valley services including services to Rhymney, Aberdare, Merthyr Tydfil, Barry Island and the city line (Radyr - Coryton). Interestingly I have never seen one on the Bridgend via. Barry service.

I have also seen a pacer (not sure if 142 or 143) running between Port Talbot Parkway and Pyle.

Other than Maesteg - Cheltenham Spa they rarely (but it does happen) show up on the Ebbw Vale Parkway line.

With the valley lines, quite often two pacers are coupled together to make a four car train. I was on a double 142 a few weeks back when I went to Penarth! (But was on a single 143 on the way back).

In South Wales, 142s and 143s which are regarded as one fleet for operating purposes have diagrammed daily working:-

Rhymney, Merthyr, Aberdare, Treherbert, Barry island, Penarth, Bridgend (via VOG), Radyr, Coryton, Maesteg, Cheltenham and also Pembroke Dock and Abergavenny on Saturdays together with Ebbw Vale strengthening. They could also work Ebbw Vale and Hereford if standing in for something else.
