I have a very vague memory of the Class 142s when they were new (ish) as I wasn't in an area where they were to be seen frequently.

Is it my imagination, or did they have a three X 7 segment display on the cab rear wall at one end (or both) by the front/rear doors.

If I didn't dream it, what was it?

Are you refering to destination equipment? If so then no they carried no internal or side displays, the only 142s that carry internal destination displays are the former MerseyRail refurbished sets

No. As I said, it was a (small) 3x7seg display ie it could only display three numbers between 0 and 9.

I'm with you now - was reading it on my phone earlier and it doesn't display things properly sometimes.

As new the destination gear was the same as fitted to the Leyland National bus, the 141s had the number tracks - the small ones you describe - exposed for a short period although they were never used and I don't think they ever had blinds fitted to them but I have seen a photo of a 141 body at Workington with the number tracks set to three whites. The 142s had the same gear fitted but only the destination section was exposed and the number tracks although present were never exposed or fitted with winders and blinds. Some 142s still have the number tracks fitted but most have had them removed. They never carried them on the sides.
