These are by far the most awful trains I have ever seen or been on. I feel sorry for passengers that have to use these every day. I hope these get scrapped.
I don't think we will see them any more in Lime Street Station after 2016.
I saw a 142 revving up full of standing passengers going to Buxton the other day. Plus other people I speak to had described a train they saw which was the worse they had ever saw, looking like a bus, I knew straight away it was the 142. Top speed of 75mph.
Those 319's can't arrive to the north sooner.

The 156's are not too bad, its just the purple interior that I'm sure any internal designer would hate.

Does it really require a new thread???

Not get used into Limestreet from 2016, haha don't be silly they will still appear don't you worry i am sure Northern will find a way.

You didn't see one go to Buxton as they are banned by the way.

They are bad units, but they are not that bad, they do the job they are meant to do with fairly minimal fuss. They are the backbone of Northern's services and are to me unsung heroes.

How can you praise a train that last time I rode on it, the doors would not close properly.
Well in 2016 what services would they be running?
If they used 156's on the mid Cheshire line then it would take about 10 mins off the journey.
What do you mean a new thread, I already searched for 142's on here, but come on they are a disgrace.

Arriva are getting rid of theirs thanks to electrification.

In an ideal world there would have been the funds for necessary investment in rolling stock back in the 80s and 90s, most of which we are only beginning to see now. However I have no doubt that in the future, if rail patronage growth does not keep going upwards, we'll find ourselves in the same situation where we need to replace ageing carriages and someone will come along with a 2030 version of the Pacer, and back to square one we go.

Sometimes i wake up in the morning and my knee has siezed up and i struggle to get going. Am i disgrace?

Nothing is really reliably but they are cheap, you get what you pay for, your fares are cheaper because of these units, for example a class 166 is four times the rent per carriage. So 200% ticket rises??? You fancy them do you?

I doubt it would take 10 minutes off the journey. The difference is not that drastic.

My point was a thread just for the sake of slagging off pacers...

Arriva may not be getting rid of their pacers as Porterbrook are wanting to do work to them to make them last to at least 2030. Only operator likely to get rid anytime soon is FGW.

However, when there is spare 142's in 2016, I suppose doubling them up on the mid cheshire line or other out of reach places to provide extra capacity could be an option.

So if I buy a ticket and part of the journey is on a class 142, would I get a cheaper ticket, is that what you are saying.
Northwich - Chester class 142, Chester - Euston class 221. Should be cheaper than Liverpool or Manchester or Chester to Euston because I used a 142.

For my local journies I prefer 142's to 150's, I am just weird though I guess.

I am not an expert on tickets in that respect, i more meant local services within PTE boundaries.

Ooh an anti northern / pacer thread, something new
Firstly, 142s can't go to Buxton so will have either been going to Hazel Grove or somewhere else, not Buxton.
You like the 156s so much, thank the 142s, without pacers we wouldn't have any sprinters and have you actually travelled on an ex BR/LM interiored 150?! 142s are far superior to them with their horrid browny orange interiors. Don't believe me, a member of staff on here has said that the 150s are far worse to walk through in the morning at Newton Heath than the 142s!
Also last time I checked trains were for travelling not to admire the pretty colours of the carriages!

Yeah just scrap them all, then when all the passengers are stood on the trains trying to get on the crush loaded 150s you will be lamenting the loss of all that capacity.

But hey as long as the few people that have managed to get on the train are happy it doesnt really matter about the poor sods left on the platforms does it!

They are not ideal but given the choice of a pacer or nothing what would you prefer?

how many of these (pointless) threads moaning about 142s have we had lately?

Those 150's are vile in my humble opinion.

Are the class 142's one such class that, in its current guise, will not be DDA compliant come 2019 and cannot be economically made so?

They can be made compliant but whether the ROSCOs consider it cost effective is another question.

I remember hearing from a former colleague at my former consultancy that Angel Trains, who own all the Class 142 units in service, will not be carrying out any further refurbishment to this type of rolling stock.

Can someone on this thread give the up-to-date Angel Trains position on this matter.

I think I used these on a return from Exeter to Barnstaple last summer, at least it was 4 wheelers of some description. Quite an experience on that line which has long stretches of jointed track. Instead of the normal dum-de-dum dum-de-dum rhythm which I actually find quite relaxing, you instead get a monotone bang bang bang bang, which comes as quite a shock.

This is still their stance, no 142s will be made DDA compliant by Angel Trains. Another ROSCO could obviously buy them but as it stands, only 143/144 will be made compliant. Makes sense as they are the better units and a good job could probably be done.

Some routes may still only need this type of unit. With only 46 of them we could probably keep them based around Manchester/Leeds and used on some of the remaining line, hopefully doubled up though!

One of my sons used a doubled-up Class 142 Southport to Manchester Piccadilly this afternoon and could not wait to telephone me to say that the internal bodywork was quite badly chipped in the carriage unit that he was in and there was an unsavoury small from the seat covers near him that passengers with wet outer coats had been sat in. However, he did say that the seat covers looked very new and "a nice shade of blue".

If I am reading itg right they wont have to be made compliant if they only run in service coupled to another (compliant) unit so there might still be some mileage in them yet.

The Pacers aren't going anywhere soon. What can they be replaced with? Deal with it.

BTW - i dint know they went to Buxton due to the steep gradients etc on the route - thought that was a solid 150/156 turn

They (pacers) dont, not even in an emergency, it is a solid 150/156 route plus 153s may be allowed.

The real reason why 142's are not allowed to operate the Buxton route has been mentioned at least twice before. And it has absolutely nothing to do with engine power or gradients. Also, I can now see the reason why some railway folk have a disliking to enthusiasts

Sure seems like trolling going on here. Either that or butthurt (Possibly literally!)

if we are being serious, correct me if I'm wrong here, but my recollection of why the Pacers were still about is not so much that new rolling stock was expensive to order, but that that Pacers were so cheap to operate.

All units get scrapped eventually, that's a given!

So any DMU working a busy service then?

Top speed of 75mph.
So same as a 378 then?
Those 319's can't arrive to the north sooner.
There's talk of re-gearing the 319s to 75 for short stop routes, you know!

Comments about them being dirty/smelly on the inside have nothing to do with what unit it is, and you know it.

Think they're too tall for some bridges the roof would strike some bridges, same as the 158s.

Good. Another thread stating that a hundred DMUs need to be withdrawn (at a time when we seem to be struggling for capacity on a number of routes, and we are seeing moans about not enough DMUs spare to run on the Todmorden Chord).

Reality is that we are stuck with 142s until 31 December 2019, and maybe stuck with 143/144s for another five years. Nothing more to add (that's not already been said)
