Class 104 2 Digit Headcode NE Region pre 1964

I have a photo at the Airmyn and Rawcliffe station (North Eastern Region Goole to Selby line) of what I think is a Class 104 (fairly certain) 3 car DMU. The station closed in 1964. The photo is very grainy and B&W. From reading around and what I can make of the shades of grey on the picture, the DMU is in BR Green, has a yellow warning panel below the cab and a grey roof. The unit has in big letters 'A7' on the front. Can anyone point me in the direction of finding our what this means ..... not been successful in my net searches so far ..... only found lots of standard 4 digit BR headcode info. M. Thanks

I'm pretty sure the 'A' would indicate an express passenger service similar to the class 1 of today and the '7' would be the route on which it is running but being route specific rather than working specific. No idea yet of the exact route in question though.

There would be a fair number of A7 workings I suspect. B7 would indicate a local stopper on the same route, similar to a class 2 of today for example.

Indeed. The last trains I can remember carrying the alpha-numeric headcodes were the Class 501s where;

B1 Watford Junction - Euston
B2 Watford Junction - Broad Street
B4 Richmond - Broad Street
(so I assume B3 was Watford Junction - Croxley Green?)
