Can somebody please clarify my options if I miss a connection?

I've got a journey tomorrow from Chesterfield to Stockport, my ticket, bought from this site, is:

Chesterfield to Sheffield Dep 1248 Arr 1300 EMR
Sheffield to Stockport Dep 1311 Arr 1353 TPE
The ticket is marked “Advance Single” & Route “Ap EMR & Connect”. Seat reservations shown for both trains

If the 1248 Chesterfield is late (it was today) such that I miss the TPE train at Sheffield do I have to wait for the next TPE service (an hour later) or can I take an EMR service (30 mins later)?

Alternatively, can I take an earlier EMR train from Chesterfield is the 1248 is showing late, but say the 1221 or 1229 is on time?

Thanks in advance for any advice

If it's one ticket routed EMR & Connections, your "connection" part, in this case Sheffield to Stockport, does not have to be taken on the same TOC if you miss a connection. It's advisable, but not mandatory, to obtain and carry proof of the missed connection to show to the conductor on the subsequent service.
