Earlier today A friend of mine was travelling today to Penrith and due to the disruption he got stuck in Preston and a family member had to drive from Penrith to pick him up. Avanti said that the delay would be at least 3 hours and likely more, hence why his mum drove to pick him up. He was on the 10:40 departure from Euston.

10-15 years ago when delay repay was paper-based, if my train was cancelled, I was able to ask the railway company for compensation for the cost of my mum having to drive to pick me up. Most of the time they would give me compensation for the cost of fuel.

There is no entitlement to any costs incurred if someone chooses to finish their journey short and take alternative transport.

If you can provide a bit more information, we can provide the most appropriate advice.

The easiest thing to do may be to simply claim Delay Repay as if the journey was completed by rail, but technically this should probably be a letter to customer services so that some appropriate compensation can be considered.

In similar circumstances I have had my fuel costs refunded by SWR. I did point out in my letter to customer services that the sum sought was considerably less than a taxi would have cost in the circumstances.

Whilst I appreciate the Delay Repay System calculation mechanism, if you are travelling on a railcard discounted advance ticket or a super off peak return (as I was in my case) the amount of delay repay is a fraction of the costs incurred in taking a taxi or the fuel.

In spite of the fact that some posters regularly tell us that the cost of fuel is negligible (not referring to taxis here)?

Agh. Just reread my earlier post and realised I have been imprecise in my language. I have claimed ( and received) the mileage rate of 45ppm.

This is one to send directly to customer services I reckon. Whilst I've never tried claiming mileage I've always had success in getting car parking charges that I would not have normally had to pay refunded by Northern when I've had to drive to a different station to my planned origin due to disruption. So I would think it at least worth a try writing and requesting it from Avanti!
