I don't think we can complain too much if the 442s are withdrawn in the next decade or so - given how old parts of them are and their "non standard" features.

We could reach 2020 with most of the stock on the railway being one of four megaclasses

* - 345 (i.e Crossrail)
* - 376 (and similar)
* - 700 (i.e. Thameslink)
* - 800 (i.e. IEP)

I believe Grand Central did look at using some of the class 442's as loco hauled carriages when they put in their bid to operate the WAG express.

Certainly I think they would be great for use on the Cardiff - Taunton route

From the photos I have seen of the class 442's they dont look any narrower than the doors on a class 153

Not a chance. :p
- IEPs can't tilt, so 390s and 221s will still be needed on the West Coast, even if it was reasonable to replace them at 15-20 years old.
- There's no way Bombardier could build enough 37x to replace the entire 31x, 32x, 442, 455/6, and 507/8 fleets in the next 7 years (these will need replacing before 2030 though, 323 possibly excepted).
- It would make no sense to replace the 33xs, 444s, 3/450s, 360s, 3/465/6s, 380s or 458s by 2020, they'd all be under 30 years old and most well under 20 (some 350s aven't even been built yet!)

And that's just electric stock - even by 2020 only about half the network will be electrified; the only diesel stock in your list are the IEPs. Don't tell me those will replace the hundreds of 15/6/7/8x vehicles (including the nearly-new 172s)... :roll:

Oh, and that 'freight' stuff?

I'll stop there.

I presume by old computers, they are Acorn Electron, BBC Model B, Sinclair ZX81 Spectrum, Commodore 64 etc..... Or are we talking newer old computers than that?
Yup, newer than that. :p
Late-80s - mid-90s Apple kit, if only because that's what I've had access to stacks of...wouldn't mind playing with the ancient stuff, but I've not had the opportunity...

I'm not being entirely serious...

But we are seeing a concentration on types of new stock (after lots of tiny classes like 175s and 460s etc) - won't be long before we see threads complaining about how boring things are (just like some enthusiasts find freight dull now its so dominated by 66s).

That'll be the earlier 455s; motors recovered from 4-SUBs if I rember right. some of them, I have been told, also have jumper cables recovered from class 76 locomotives...!!

The 455 also uses 'recycled' DH25 compressors for the brakes. The oldest of which I know of is 1938 which is even pre class 405 4-SUB (1941) so could be off a 3-SUB or a BIL or god knows what!
