Can anyone tell me what the Civil Engineer train is doing, leaves Swindon Transfer every weekday at 1551, does a big loop round, back in Swindon at 2054. Doesn't stop anywhere. Yellow double unit, cab each end will just flat bed and what looks like handrail down each side. thanks

That sounds like a Rail Head Treatment Train on a daily circuit to clear the rails of fallen leaves and the slippery mess they make.

Not the RHTT. The Swindon area is usually covered off the Gloucester Horton Road circuit

Looking at the video I took, just make out the number DR76921 on the rear unit. Can't see the number on the front, just made up of these two units. High Output Plant System.
Why would these two just go out night after night, same route, same times ?

By the looks of it, it will be a RailHead Treatment Train (RHTT). There’s information towards the bottom of this page:

We have 32 multipurpose vehicles and 29 locomotive-hauled rail head treatment trains (RHTT) – our dedicated, purpose-built equipment – that deliver our autumn rail head treatment (RHT) programme. Both these types of train are equipped with a high-pressure pump delivering 1,500 Bar and, if required, can apply adhesion modifier to each running rail.

Adhesion modifier is a mixture of suspension gel (so it can be pumped), sand (to help train wheels grip the rail), and steel or iron shot that is pushed through contamination (compressed leaves and debris) on the rail head to help the track circuits work correctly.

it isn't an RHTT. It IS an MPV of a similar but newer type. it is one of these: https://www.networkrail.co.uk/runni...es/high-output/high-output-plant-system-hops/

Network Rail: Our HOPS train is used for our project to electrify the Great Western Mainline.

It will be going out to monitor the state of the OHLE and repair it where required i should think. It could even be something as simple as driver training or a turning movement.
